Is Alaska Airlines Visa Signature worth it?

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature is a great travel card for travelers in the 30 states that the airline offers flights from. Travelers in the western U.S., where there are the largest number of routes, are the most natural fit for this card. In 2016, Alaska acquired Virgin America, making it the fifth largest airline in the US by passengers carried, so this card is in no way restricted to people interested in the state of Alaska.

For most people who redeem it on most flights, the annual $121 companion fare will more than pay for the $75 annual fee, especially if they redeem it on an expensive flight. The only downside of the companion fare is that it may require multiple bookings if you are booking for more than two people, leaving open the possibility of being seated separately.

The earning rate is high: 3 miles for every $1 spent on eligible Alaska Airlines purchases, but some consumers have reported that it is difficult to redeem miles for a reasonable airfare redemption value, while other consumers have found this not to be the case. It’s important to mention that on Alaska Airlines’ award chart a one-way coast-to-coast trip across the U.S. in the Main Cabin, not First Class, could cost as much as 50,000 miles.

In the flight booking system, we found that most of the options for a roundtrip flight from New York to San Diego would cost 50,000 miles each way; however, there were a number of 20k mile each way options as well, and even 12.5k mile each way options that often included American Airlines as one connecting flight. Unfortunately, American Airlines flights will not be available in the portal in the future, and currently only a few of the partner airlines are available in the portal.

For this particular search, the mile value varied from about less than one half cent per mile to almost two cents depending on the route you book. While the end of the American Airlines partnership will be the end of redeeming Alaska miles on American and will make earning Alaska miles on American harder, in general earning miles is flexible, and you can even earn miles by entering your frequent flyer, called your Mileage Plan, number on Alaska Airlines? website after flying a partner.

There are also promotions that can boost your miles. For example, we opened our Alaska Mileage Plan account and found a promo that allowed earning double miles on certain one-way flights, effectively halving the cost of award flights when you go to redeem your double miles. Even if the Alaska Airlines awards program isn?t the easiest to navigate, the 40,000 point signup bonus makes it worth it.

If you live in the western U.S. and plan to fly the airline, this is a great card for you.

Pros

  • Intro bonus of 40,000 miles and one $121 companion fare in coach after spending $2,000 in first 90 days after account opening
  • Book travel with American Airlines, British Airways, and and more than 10 others

Cons

  • No priority boarding

Is Susan G. Komen Cash Rewards Visa Credit Card from Bank of America worth it?

Susan G. Komen Cash Rewards Visa Credit Card from Bank of America is a great card for people who want to support breast cancer research and get cash rewards. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation receives at least $3 and 0.08% of all purchases (less returns) made with the card. In addition, Komen receives $3 for each renewal of a card that is open with active charging privileges during the 12 month period and does not have a zero balance at the time of the renewal.

It?s excellent that $3 goes to the Komen Foundation per new cardholders, but the fact that the card donates $3 to Komen during a month in which you are carrying a balance is a little strange. Still, it?s a solid card with a lot of flexibility in your 3% rewards category. You can choose between gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores, or home improvement/furnishings. If you don?t pick a category for this month, the card defaults to the previous category you had picked.

This card is basically the same as the Bank of America Cash Rewards, and like that card it is highly recommended.

Pros

  • Help fight breast cancer Susan G. Komen has received more than $9.5 million from Bank of America from the program since 2009
  • Online $200 cash rewards bonus after making at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of your account opening

  • Enjoy an Introductory annual fee of $0 for the first year; a $59 fee will apply to World Mastercard accounts thereafter
  • Cardholders get exclusive access to the lowest flight redemption levels at Spirit.com
  • Cardholders receive Zone 2 priority boarding by either using their Spirit Airlines Mastercard to purchase tickets directly from Spirit Airlines or by showing their Spirit Airlines Mastercard to the gate agent upon boarding

Is Spirit Airlines World MasterCard worth it?

Spirit Airlines World MasterCard is a solid card for Spirit travelers. Cardholders earn two miles per dollar on every purchase. This is not a high rewards rate but great that it applies to all purchases, which is unusual for an airline card. Usually a 2X rewards rate for an airline card would only apply to purchases with the airline.

The challenge with the Spirit Airlines World MasterCard is the $59 annual fee after the first year. Other cards have no annual fee, like the Citi Double Cash, and give the exact same rewards rate, but allow you to get cash back. With this in mind, the only people who should look at Spirit Airlines World MasterCard seriously are people who fly Spirit and enjoy hunting for deals.

As an example, we evaluated the point value of a one-way trip from LAX to LGA and found the cost for a trip in early November, during an off-peak period, to be $200. If this flight were an off-peak flight, it would cost 7,500 points for a Spirit Airlines World MasterCard customer. The point value would then be: $200 / 7,500 = more than two cents per point.

This was just one flight we searched. As you might expect, two cents per point is very good for airfare redemption. Because Spirit is not in an airline alliance, nor does it have point transfer partners, the miles you earn must be used for Spirit flights. So if you fly Spirit Airlines a few times a year, you will save money with the Spirit Airlines World MasterCard by redeeming points on off-peak dates as noted above, even when you take into account Spirit Airlines’ fees on reward tickets requested less than 21 days from departure: $50 between 7 and 20 days prior to departure and $75 6 days or less prior to departure.

The signup bonus of 15,000 bonus miles after your first purchase + 15,000 bonus miles after making at least $500 in purchases within 90 days is valuable for these travelers as well. Even at a conservative one cent per point, the bonus is worth 30,000 x $0.01 = $300 in Spirit airfare, more than covering the $59 annual fee for several years. But keep in mind that using this card as your everyday spend card to earn miles comes at a cost.

You could get the exact same rewards value, 2% or 2 cents per $1, with the Citi Double Cash, but you would be getting cash instead of miles confined to one airline.

Pros

  • 15,000 bonus miles after your first purchase + 15,000 bonus miles after making at least $500 in purchases within 90 days of your account opening
  • Miles can be worth 2 cents or more when redeemed for off-peak bookings
  • No foreign transaction fee

Cons

  • $59 annual fee after first year
  • Off-peak flights are limited: not all flights during off-peak dates are eligible

  • Use your MyCruise? points for rewards like cruise discounts and onboard credits on all three cruise lines

Is Royal Caribbean Visa Signature worth it?

Royal Caribbean Visa Signature is a solid card for people who take cruises on Royal Caribbean and its sister brands, Celebrity and Azamara. Cardholders earn 2 MyCruise points per $1 spent on qualifying purchases with Royal Caribbean and its sister brands and 1 MyCruise point per $1 spent on all other purchases. The value of the points do not exceed one cent, but are close and sometimes exactly one cent. This is a relatively good rewards rate.

For example, the rewards redemption guide explains that 40,000 MyCruise Points get you an upgrade on a 7 to 8 night Celebrity Cruises Caribbean sailing for two (veranda to minimum available Concierge Class stateroom), and that the value of upgrade may not exceed four hundred dollars ($400 USD value).

On the 8 Night Eastern Caribbean & The Bahamas cruise we evaluated, we found that the veranda base cost was $1699 per person, whereas the Concierge Class base cost was $1999 per person. This put the upgrade value at $300 and the point redemption at $300 / 40000 = $.0075 per point.

Some of the redemptions are more straightforward and as mentioned above have a value of exactly one cent per point, for example a $1,000 discount off any Celebrity Cruises ship itinerary is available for 100,000 points. That’s one cent per point. If you cruise with a guest a few times a year on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, or Azamara cruises and use your Royal Caribbean Visa Signature to book the tickets, you would earn: $1699 ticket price x 2 travelers x 3 cruises x 2 points rewards rate = 20,388 points.

Add in the 10,000 point signup bonus and you?re up to 30,388 points or about $300 of value.

Not bad, but you can’t convert MyCruise points to cash back or statement credit, so unless you like being encouraged to spend more on cruise vacations by accumulating points with Royal Caribbean, our evaluation would recommend you get other cards that get you flat-rate 2% cash back on all purchases like the Citi Double Cash or Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature, or a travel rewards card with a higher than 2x rewards rate that you can use to book your cruises and than redeem the points earned for travel in the form of airfare, car rentals, or in the form of statement credit or cash back.

That said, for people who are loyal to Royal Caribbean and like the idea of redemptions for free upgrades, including a charitable donation redemption option, this is a solid no annual fee card that could be a great fit.

Pros

  • Receive 10,000 Bonus Points after making a qualifying transaction in the first 90 days of account opening – worth $100 in onboard credit
  • Redeem MyCruise points for stateroom upgrades, cruise discounts, companion fares, cruise vacations, onboard credits or amenities, merchandise and charitable donations
  • Comes with Visa Signature benefits
  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee

Cons

  • Other cards have 2% cash back for all purchase categories or have a higher rewards rate in certain categories, for example on travel
  • No redemption for cash back or statement credit
