Is Wells Fargo Business Secured Credit Card worth it?

Wells Fargo Business Secured is a solid card for people looking to build business credit and earn rewards in the form of cash back or points. Wells Fargo reports your payment and usage behavior to the Small Business Financial Exchange, which leases that data to companies that will use it to determine your creditworthiness.

A deposit of $500 is required to open the account, and an additional minimum deposit of $500 is required for each additional credit card issued on the credit card account. Monthly payments are not reported to the credit bureaus directly, so Wells Fargo Business Secured will not build your personal credit.

As for the value of the card itself, cardholders receive 1.5% cash back on every $1 spent or earn 1 point on every $1 spent. You can choose whether you want points or cash back. While cash back is the most flexible redemption option, there are some benefits to the points program. For example, you get a 10% point credit when you redeem points online. You also earn extra bonus points or discounts from Earn More Mall? retailers, such as 3 points per $1 at Staples, 2 points per $1 at Expedia, and 10 points per dollar at 24 hour Fitness.

To redeem for travel through Wells Fargo Rewards, standard airfare starts at 25,000 points for a domestic round-trip flight on any major airline. This is conservatively a 1.5 cent per point value, which is good for any type of standard redemption, including travel. When booking travel online at wellsfargorewards.com, you can pay with rewards Points, cash or a combination of both, which is a nice feature not shared by every rewards program.

If you choose to opt for cash back instead of points, you receive your cash back automatically as a credit to your statement or to your eligible checking or savings account each quarter: March, June, September, and December. Typically, 12-18 months of on-time payments will allow you to build credit to the point of getting an unsecured card; however, Wells Fargo does not specify a time period that they may upgrade you to one of their unsecured cards.

In any case, if you?re looking to build business credit and earn rewards in the form of cash back or points, Wells Fargo Business Secured is a great card for you.

Pros

  • Build your business credit
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Lower than average APR

Cons

  • Minimum security deposit of $500 per card
  • Up to 10 employee cards available but at a cost of $25 per card
  • Cannot redeem travel rewards online, must call Wells Fargo Go Far Rewards customer service

Is Digital Federal Credit Union Visa Platinum Secured worth it?

Digital Federal Credit Union Visa Platinum Secured is a great card for building credit. The minimum deposit is high – $500. As with other credit card applications, approval is reliant on not only your credit score but also your income and payment history. If you have a high number of past due, or delinquent, accounts, it will be harder to get approved. Users of this card have reported that they were denied with bad credit, so if you do have bad credit, it would be wise to only apply if you have a good income and solid payment history.

Pros

  • No fee on cash advances and balance transfers
  • Low regular APR
  • No annual fee

Cons

  • $500 minimum deposit
  • Must be a DCU member – simple and as low as $15 to join through a participating organization or through a charitable donation

Is AAA Member Rewards worth it?

AAA Member Rewards Credit Card is a great card for AAA members with 3 points per dollar on eligible AAA purchases and travel which can be booked through the AAA Travel Center. For non-AAA members, the card is a solid choice, with 2 points per dollar on popular spending categories – gas, grocery store, wholesale club, and drugstore purchases.

Point redemptions start at 5,000 points for statement credit, 2,500 points for air-travel, 3,500 for gift cards, 5,000 for AAA vouchers, including AAA auto repair facilities. Points are worth one cent when redeemed as statement credit and a little more when redeemed for AAA purchases. This card has no annual fee.

Pros

  • $150 statement credit after $750 in purchases in first 90 days of account opening
  • 3x rewards on eligible AAA purchases and travel
  • 2x rewards in popular spending categories ? gas, grocery store, wholesale club, and drugstore purchases
  • No annual fee

Cons

  • 5000 points must be earned before they can be redeemed for cash or AAA benefits

Why 5 Stars?

Regular APR

The normal APR of 14.99% – 24.99% (Variable) is average. Pretty good for a rewards card, but not excellent.
4 Stars

Intro APR

There is an Intro APR of 0% for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers, as long as the transfer is made in the first 60 days of opening the account. This is a great Intro APR. But there is a caveat to be aware of with balance transfers, and this goes for all balance transfer cards.

If you make a transfer and then make a purchase, you have to pay the minimum payment and on top of that pay off the purchase in that billing period to avoid interest. Because you have to know your minimum payment to get this right, most people should use a different card for purchases.
5 Stars

Fees

There’s no annual fee and no foreign transaction, but there’s no break on balance transfer or cash advance fees. Plus, there’s up to 29.99% penalty interest, depending on your credit, if you make a late payment.
4 Stars

Perks

Free cash is good – especially $150 statement credit after $750 in purchases in first 90 days. 3x rewards on AAA purchases and travel and 2x rewards in gas, grocery store, wholesale club, and drugstore purchases covers almost every major category of everyday purchase people use credit cards for.

Putting aside the AAA rewards for a second, if all you did was spend $1000 on gas, $3000 on groceries and wholesale club purchases, and $1000 on drugstore purchases, you would get $50 in statement credit. Not bad for a no annual fee card. The card is a Visa Signature too, so it offers a long list of benefits.
5 Stars

Overall

The rewards are pretty good and will be even sweeter if you are already comfortable making purchases through the AAA.com website. There’s no break on interest or penalty interest, so keep an eye on your balance and hopefully you won’t have to deal with interest.
