Is American Express Gold Card worth it?

American Express Gold is a great card for cardholders who spend a lot on dining out and grocery shopping. These categories earn four points per dollar (up to $25,000 per year in purchases for supermarkets, then one point per dollar).

American Express offers the following charge cards: American Express Plum Card, American Express Business Green Rewards, American Express Business Platinum and American Express Platinum, and American Express Business Gold and American Express Gold Card. Just like for the others, If you need to carry a balance with American Express Gold, you can use American Express Pay Over Time feature, which for American Express Gold uses an APR of 17.49% to 24.49% (Variable). You essentially now have a credit card, but not all charges will get carried over into the next month. You choose between the Extended Payment Option, where charges over $100 are automatically moved into your Pay Over Time balance, Select & Pay Later, where you manually choose charges over $100 to move into your Pay Over Time balance, or Sign & Travel, where airline tickets, hotel stays, car rentals, cruises and charges in other countries are moved into your Pay Over Time balance. It’s not the simplest program but whichever choice you select, you basically now have a credit card, where you can choose to pay the full balance, the minimum payment, or anything in between. This is in contrast to what would normally happen with a charge card, where you are required to pay the full balance every month, and if you don’t, you incur a late fee even if you pay an amount that would be above what would be considered the normal minimum payment if the card were a credit card. Charge cards also don’t impact your credit, because you are not extended a credit line.

Pros

  • High four points per dollar on dining and groceries
  • Higher than average three points per dollar travel rewards, redeemable on Amex Travel, which in most cases offers competitive rates with Expedia and Orbitz

Cons

  • $250 Annual fee
  • Inflexible rewards requirements: other cards offer a similar rewards rate on all travel purchases – but unlike other cards – American Express Gold will not earn rewards on bookings through third-party travel sites

Is American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Credit Card worth it?

American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp is a great card for people who fly American Airlines from time to time, but don’t want an annual fee card. Cardholders earn 2 AAdvantage miles on every dollar spent on American Airlines purchases and at grocery stores, including grocery delivery services.

The card has no annual fee, and as a result you get no first free checked bag and no preferred boarding, which is offered by the other AAdvantage cards issued by Citi. Pros

  • Earn 2 AAdvantage miles for each $1 spent at grocery stores, including grocery delivery services
  • Earn 10,000 American Airlines AAdvantage Bonus Miles and Receive a $50 statement credit after making $500 in purchases within the first 3 months

Is Discover it Balance Transfer worth it?

Discover it Balance Transfer is a strong balance transfer card with a 0% balance transfer intro APR offer for 18 months. With the cash back match, 5% cash back in activated categories, and ongoing 1% cash back, this is a strong rewards card too.

Discover it? Balance Transfer has a shorter 0% Intro APR period on purchases, 6 months, and a longer 0% period on balance transfers, 18 months, versus Discover It Cash Back, which has 14 months of no interest on both purchases and balance transfers. The cards are otherwise the same, so the only decision to make is whether financing or paying off debt is more important to you. You can’t go wrong with either one when it comes to cash back as they earn the same amount and have the same calendar of cash back categories.

Here’s the 2020 Discover 5% cash back Calendar:

Jan – Mar 2020Grocery Stores, Walgreens, and CVS
Apr – Jun 2020Gas Stations, Uber, Lyft and Wholesale Clubs

Is Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard worth it?

Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard is a solid card for people who shop at Kroger frequently. The bulk of Kroger stores are located mainly in the midwest and south.

Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard earns 3 points per dollar on Kroger’s own products including Heritage Farm, “p$$t check this out”, Luvsome, Bakery Fresh Goodness, Fresh Foods Market, Fresh Selections by Kroger, Home Sense, Comforts for Baby, Simple Truth Organic, Simple Truth, Abound, Private Selection, HemisFares, Big K, Pet Pride, and Kroger. If you don’t regularly buy at least a few of those brands, this card may be less valuable for you.

Cardholders also get 2 points per dollar at the Kroger Family of Companies (excluding fuel centers), which includes Kroger Marketplace, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, King Soopers, Dillons, Smith’s Food & Drug Stores, Smith?s Marketplace, Fry’s Food and Drug Store, Fry’s Marketplace, QFC – Quality Food Centers, City Market, Baker’s, Owen’s, JayC Food Stores, Gerbes, Pay Less Super Markets, Food4Less (So CA, NV, IN and IL stores only), Foods Co, Fred Meyer Jewelers, Littman Jewelers, Barclay Jewelers, and Kroger.

Cardholders also get an additional 25 cents off per gallon for one year each time you redeem at least 100 fuel points at participating Kroger Family of Companies Fuel Centers. To earn fuel points, you buy groceries with your Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard and earn 1 point per dollar. If you bought $100 of groceries, you would earn the 25 cent discount for one year. Note fuel points do not count towards rewards points, and you would not receive another 25 cents off that already discounted price for redeeming more fuel points.

The Kroger points rewards are issued as Rewards Certificates that can be redeemed at the Kroger Family of Companies, not including Kroger fuel centers. The points are worth one half cent per dollar. Note that the average credit card point is worth one cent per dollar. Rewards Certificates can not be used to purchase alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco or prescription products.

The rewards rate is only 3 points per $1 x one half cent per point = 1.5%, and strictly from a financial perspective you would be better off with a flat-rate cash back card that gives you unlimited cash back on all purchases.

For example, Citi Double Cash gives you 2% cash back on anything, not just Kroger products: 1% when you buy, plus 1% as you pay the balance. If you don’t spend that much at Kroger, you can do even better on groceries and gas specifically with Bank of America Cash Rewards, which gets you 3% cash back on gas and 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs up to $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter, followed by 1% cash back on everything else.

If the 25 cent gas benefit is important to you, and if you shop at Kroger or its other companies often and want a store-specific Kroger card, Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard is a solid card for you.

Pros

  • 3 points per eligible net $1 on the Kroger Family of Companies Own Brand Products
  • An additional 25 off per gallon for one year each time you redeem at least 100 fuel points at participating Kroger Family of Companies Fuel Centers

Cons

  • Points are worth one half cent

Is JetBlue Plus Card worth it?

JetBlue Plus Card is a great card for JetBlue travelers. It has a $99 annual fee and earns 6X points on JetBlue purchases, 2X points at restaurants and grocery stores, and 1X points on all other purchases. JetBlue Plus Card is like the JetBlue Card, except JetBlue Plus’ signup bonus is 4X higher and the earning rate on JetBlue purchases is 2X higher.

Valuing JetBlue points conservatively at one cent per point, the signup bonus is worth $400 in JetBlue travel. You get Points Pooling with TrueBlue points as well, which allows you and up to 7 friends and family members to combine points to earn awards faster with no point transfer fee.

One thing that is particular to JetBlue among airlines is that you can’t transfer JetBlue points to any other airlines, but you can redeem them on Hawaiian Airlines.

Besides JetBlue flights, you can earn points by the mile flown by adding your TrueBlue number during the booking process on Hawaiian Airlines, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Icelandair, JSX, Silver Airways, Singapore Airlines, and South African Airways. Most partners offer earnings starting at 1 Point / 2 miles flown and different seating areas have different rewards. If you’re in frequent flyer programs with any of these other airlines, check the value of your ticket before you make the TrueBlue purchase to make sure it’s worth it to book with TrueBlue, because you can only earn rewards from one program for your flight.

If you rarely fly JetBlue but are interested in JetBlue Plus to get started, consider that JetBlue tied with Southwest Airlines for the top place in customer satisfaction among North American low-cost carriers, according to JD Power. Even if you don?t fly JetBlue regularly, if you fly JetBlue at all and get $100 of value on waived first checked bag fees, flight redemptions, or through pooling JetBlue points, this is a great card for you.
