Is U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature Card worth it?

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature is a great card for people who want to book airfare directly with the rewards program where they earned the points and to earn travel rewards on their cell phone bill, donations to charity, and either airfare, gas stations or grocery.

Cardholders earn 2 FlexPoints on qualifying charitable donations and most cell phone service providers, and 2 FlexPoints on airfare, gas stations or grocery purchases, whichever of the three has the greatest amount in total purchases.

The signup bonus of 25000 FlexPoints is worth $375 in travel, hotel stays, car rentals, and more. FlexPoints have a fixed value of 1.5 cents per point and can be redeemed for travel rewards with more than 150 airlines, thousands of hotels, car rentals, and cruise lines through the FlexPerks rewards program.

With a $49 annual fee starting the second year, you could spend just $2000 across the 2X reward categories during the entire year and pay for the fee. As a more realistic example, if you spent $500 per month in 2X reward categories, $250 on phone bills and $250 on gas and groceries and another $500 on other expenses, you would earn $270 worth of travel. While you can redeem FlexPoints for cash back, they will not be worth as much. The FlexPoints rewards program also doesn?t have any transfer partners, so you won’t be able to transfer to try to increase their value.

Another option you might consider is Capital One Venture Rewards, which earns 2 Miles per dollar on all purchases and has a $95 annual fee starting the second year. It has a signup bonus of 50,000 miles once you spend $3,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $500 in travel. As you can see from the signup bonus value, Capital One miles are worth only about one cent per mile; however, you can get higher value by transferring them to one of their 15 transfer parters, so if you?re more hands-on when it comes to points, Capital One is the better option. Also keep in mind you would be earning 2 miles per $1 on all purchases.

Another option is Chase Sapphire Preferred, which has a $95 annual fee – not waived in year one – and earns 2X points on travel and dining. Earning 2X travel rewards on dining might be attractive to you. Chase Sapphire Preferred also has a signup bonus of 60,000 one-time bonus points offer after you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months of account opening which is $750 in travel. This valuation takes into account the 25% bonus you get for redeeming Chase Ultimate Rewards for travel.

Note there have been reports of U.S. Bank’s FlexPerks rewards redemption website technology being outdated. According to consumers, this may have resulted in difficulty booking through the online portal and even point value decreases in their accounts.

On the other hand, there are more than 1300 5 star reviews on U.S. Bank?s website for U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature. If you want travel rewards and to book your airfare directly with the rewards program where you earned the points, not to mention the lower annual fee starting the second year than competitors, then U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature is a great card for you.

Pros

  • Visa Signature benefits
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Earn 25,000 enrollment FlexPoints worth $375 on airfare, hotel stays, car rentals and more. Just spend $2,000 in eligible net purchase within the first four months
  • Earn 2 FlexPoints for every net $1 spent at airlines, gas stations or grocery stores – whichever you spend most on each monthly billing cycle
  • Earn 2 FlexPoints on qualifying charitable donations and most cell phone service providers

Is U.S. Bank FlexPerks Business Travel Rewards worth it?

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Business Travel Rewards Visa Signature is a great card for business owners who want to earn travel rewards on their cell phone bill, donations to charity, and either gas, office supplies or airlines, and don’t want to deal with transferring points.

Cardholders earn 2 FlexPoints on qualifying charitable donations and most cell phone service providers, and 2 FlexPoints on gas, office supply store or airline purchases, whichever of the three has the greatest amount in total purchases.

The signup bonus of 25000 FlexPoints is worth $375 in travel, hotel stays, car rentals, and more. FlexPoints have a semi-fixed value that works out to about 1.5 cents per point when redeemed for travel rewards with more than 150 airlines, thousands of hotels, car rentals, and cruise lines.

With a $55 annual fee starting the second year, you could spend just $2000 across the 2X reward categories during the entire year and pay for the fee. As a more realistic example, if you spent $500 per month in 2X reward categories, $250 on phone bills and $250 on gas and another $500 on other business expenses, you would earn $270 worth of travel.

While you can redeem FlexPoints for cash back, they will not be worth as much. The FlexPoints rewards program also doesn’t have any transfer partners, so you won?t be able to transfer to try to increase their value.

Another option you might consider is Capital One Spark Miles for Business, which has unlimited 2 miles per $1 on every purchase, everywhere, but has a $95 annual fee in the second year. Capital One miles are worth only about one cent per mile, but you can get higher value by transferring them to one of their 15 transfer parters, so if you’re more hands-on when it comes to points, Capital One is the better option. Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business is the no annual fee version that still offers 1.5 Miles per $1 on every purchase.

If you’re more interested in American Express – both Capital One cards are on the Visa network – consider Blue Business Plus Credit Card from American Express, which earns 2X Membership Rewards points on every eligible purchase up to $50,000. Membership Rewards points are worth about one cent per dollar, but they also have transfer partners, including British Airways, Delta, JetBlue, and more than 5 more.

Finally, Ink Business Preferred Credit Card is a great card if you can pay a $95 annual fee starting in the first year, because it offers 3x miles on the first $150,000 spent on travel, shipping, Internet, cable, phone, and advertisements on social media and search sites. Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth 25% more when you redeem for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards, so points go from one cent per point to 1.25 cents per point. Chase travel partners include British Airways, JetBlue, United Airlines, and more than 5 more.

Each of these cards will offer you good overall value, so it depends on which airline or bank you are loyal to. If you are a U.S. Bank business customer or would like to become one and you would like travel rewards without having to think about transfer partners, U.S. Bank FlexPerks Business Travel Rewards Visa Signature is a great card for you.

Pros

  • Visa Signature benefits
  • Earn 25,000 enrollment FlexPoints worth $375 on airfare, hotel stays, car rentals and more
  • 2 points on gas, office supply store or airline purchases (whichever is greater)
  • 2 points on qualifying charitable donations

  • Points earned count towards Companion Pass – the benefit that lets a friend fly with you free of airline charges for a year
  • Four Upgraded Boardings per year when available

Is Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card worth it?

Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card is a great card for business travelers who fly Southwest. You get 70,000 points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months, and these points as well as future points you earn count toward the Companion Pass, the coveted benefit that allows you to bring any friend on any Southwest flight free of charge with you for a year.

Plus, when you earn the Companion Pass, it’s valid for the remainder of the current year and for the next year. Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card also offers Global Entry or TSA Pre Fee credit in the form of a statement credit of up to $100 every four years. If you don’t have another card that has provided you this as a benefit already, this is a great opportunity to sign up and save some time going through security, and in the case of Global Entry, U.S. customs.

Generally, business cards are less valuable than personal cards, because they have higher annual fees and fewer perks, but Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business earns 3 points for every $1 you spend on Southwest Airlines purchases, and given that Southwest Airlines points are worth about 1.5 cents, that’s a 3 x .015 = 4.5% rewards rate. In other words, for every hundred dollars you spend on Southwest Airlines, you earn $4.50 in credit for future flights. This is almost like having a 4.5% off coupon for every Southwest flight.

You also get four upgraded boardings per year when available that allow you to upgrade to A1-A15. A is the boarding group and 1-15 is the boarding position. For example, A1 boards before A15. With the sign up bonus alone being worth 70,000 x $0.015 = $1050, this $199 annual fee card makes financial sense.

Pros

  • Earn 70,000 points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening
  • Points earned count towards 125,000 Companion Pass amount – the benefit that lets a friend fly with you free of airline charges for a year. Note that purchased points do not count towards Companion Pass
  • 9,000 points every year on your Cardmember anniversary
  • No foreign transaction fee

  • $199 annual fee

Is Amazon Business American Express Card worth it?

Amazon Business American Express Card is a solid card for business owners who make purchases at any of four Amazon-owned companies who are not Amazon Prime members. With no annual fee and either 3% back or 60 days interest free on U.S. purchases at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market, this card offers a reasonable choice to business owners. You can choose to take more time to pay off a purchase or you can pay it off right away during that billing period and get the rewards. American Express Plum Card has a similar feature, where you can get a 1.5% early-pay discount, or you can get up to 60 days interest free.

Other no-annual fee cards offer longer interest-free periods though, so for business owners financing expenses all at once upfront, 60 days interest free is not that attractive. If that’s not the case though, and instead there will be expenses purchased later than a year or more after getting the card that need financing, the 60 day interest free period starts to become useful. If you have a Prime membership you could apply for Amazon Business Prime American Express Card, and it goes up to 90 days.

Rewards are provided in point form and are redeemable as statement credit or to pay for eligible purchases at Amazon.com or Amazon.com/Business. Points are worth the normal amount of one cent each. 2% cash back at U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, and on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers covers most common credit card expenses when you combine it with Amazon for almost anything you need and Whole Foods Market for groceries. There’s no rewards on common expenses like drugstores and wholesale clubs, and travel, if that’s a common expense for you.

The 3% Back on U.S. purchases at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market is great, considering Amazon is called “The Everything Store”. If you had a $129 Amazon Prime membership, you could get 5% back by applying for Amazon Business Prime American Express Card. There are some other store cards that offer 5% back though. TJX Rewards Platinum MasterCard gets 5% back at Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra (formerly Sierra Trading Post), and Homesense. And Target REDcard MasterCard, which gets 5% back at Target. However, neither of these cards have sign up bonuses. Amazon Business American Express cardholders get a free $100 Amazon gift card and a $100 statement credit if you spend $3000 in the first 90 days in the 2% and 1% categories. This is an important gotcha if you want the statement credit. Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market won’t count.

If you are already spending a lot at Amazon or Whole Foods, or if you frequently need extra time to pay off purchases there, this card is a no-brainer.

Pros

  • $100 Amazon gift card upon approval
  • 3% cash back or 60 days interest free on U.S. purchases at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market
  • No annual fee

Cons

  • Amazon Prime membership would earn 5% cash back with the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card
  • 60 day interest free period is not competitive with cards who offer longer interest free periods for all purchases if you are financing purchases as soon as you open the card
  • No travel rewards

Why 5 Stars?

Regular APR

The interest rate is nothing special, 15.99% – 23.99%. It could be higher or lower in that range depending on your credit score and varies with the Prime rate.
4 Stars

Intro APR

No Intro APR on balance transfers or purchases is normal for most business cards, but it doesn’t do you any favors if you’re looking to finance a big expenses as soon as you get the card. However, the 60 day interest free option on Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market purchases is nice to have to turn on whenever you need it.
4 Stars

Fees

No annual fee and no foreign transaction fee. Check.
5 Stars

Perks

The 3% back at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market is great, but if you had a Prime membership, you could get Amazon Business Prime American Express Card and get 5% back.
4 Stars

Overall

If you’re already spending a lot at Amazon or Whole Foods, you’ll immediately start to get a significant 3% discount on those purchases with Amazon Business American Express. Or, you can push some of them out for 60 days if you need a little breathing room to pay them off. This card has a definite purpose, but it’s not for travel and it wouldn’t be the primary spending card in most business owners’ wallets.
