Is American Express Business Gold worth it?

American Express Business Gold is a great card for small businesses with significant travel, shipping, gas, restaurant, advertising, and computer purchases made directly from select providers. These expenses earn 4x points on the American Express Gold Business Card. The $295 annual fee will be worth it for businesses that spend and use the rewards.

If you need to carry a balance, you can use American Express Pay Over Time feature at an APR of 19.74%. You essentially now have a credit card, but not all charges will get carried over into the next month. You choose between the Extended Payment Option, where charges over $100 are automatically moved into your Pay Over Time balance, Select & Pay Later, where you manually choose charges over $100 to move into your Pay Over Time balance, or Sign & Travel, where airline tickets, hotel stays, car rentals, cruises and charges in other countries are moved into your Pay Over Time balance. It’s not the simplest program but whichever choice you select, you basically now have a credit card, where you can choose to pay the full balance, the minimum payment, or anything in between. This is in contrast to what would normally happen with a charge card, where you are required to pay the full balance every month, and if you don’t, you incur a late fee even if you pay an amount that would be above what would be considered the normal minimum payment if the card were a credit card. Charge cards also don’t impact your credit, because you are not extended a credit line.

Pros

  • 25% points back after you use points for all or part of an eligible flight booked with Amex Travel, up to 250,000 points back per calendar year – Amex Travel offers rates comparable to major travel sites
  • 4x points for a number of business expense categories

Cons

  • $295 Annual fee
  • No Intro APR to fund business purchases

Is Citi Costco Anywhere Credit Card worth it?

Citi Costco Anywhere Visa is a great card for Costco shoppers who spend a lot on restaurants, travel, and especially gas. The annual fee starts at $60 for a Costco membership.

The rewards rate high. The unlimited 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases is especially attractive, but the challenge is that the cash is returned to you once a year and is only redeemable at Costco. In other words, it’s not really cash back, but a Costco certificate.

Pros

  • 4% cash back on eligible gas for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter – that’s $280 if you spend $7,000
  • 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases
  • 2% cash back on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com – great for frequent Costco shoppers

Cons

  • Must be Costco member
  • No travel perks, just cash back on eligible travel purchases – airfare, hotels, car rentals, travel agencies, cruise lines and Costco Travel
  • Cash back is provided as an annual credit card reward certificate once your February billing statement closes, and is redeemable for cash or merchandise at U.S. Costco Warehouses

Is Amex EveryDay? Preferred Credit Card worth it?

Amex EveryDay? Preferred is a great card for people with a general mix of everyday expenses. Cardholders earn 3X Points at US Supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, 2X Points at US Gas Stations, and 1X Points on Other Purchases.

The annual fee is $95 with Amex EveryDay? Preferred and $0 for Amex EveryDay?, and the difference comes in the rewards rate. Amex EveryDay? earns 2X rewards on supermarkets and 1X on other purchases and has a 20% bonus on Membership Rewards points if you use your card 20 times in a billing period. If you use your card a lot, you?ll want to go for the Preferred.

Amex EveryDay? Preferred not only earns 3X on supermarkets and 2X on gas, as mentioned, but it also earns 50% extra Membership Rewards points if you use your card 30 times in a billing period. This increases your rewards rate significantly to 4X Points on supermarkets and 3X points on gas.

Another nice benefit you get with Amex EveryDay? Preferred is that the points transfer at a 1:1 ratio to most American Express Membership Rewards partner airlines, including Air France, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta, Etihad Airways, and more than 5 more. Not every rewards program grants a 1:1 ratio on so many travel partners, but Amex Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards do.

Cardholders also get a nice hotel perk through the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) program, in which you can book Hyatt reservations for significantly more than one cent per point. American Express has a lowest hotel rates guarantee for amextravel.com hotels.

This means if you book a qualifying hotel rate on amextravel.com and pay for it, and then find the same room in the same hotel, for the same dates and for the same number of children and adults at a lower price online, they will refund you the difference. Note that there have been reports from consumers that it?s important to make sure you get credit by getting a screenshot of the amextravel.com price and the lower price at the same time. Amex members also earn an additional Membership Rewards point, for a 2X total rewards rate, when you book travel at amextravel.com.

With a $95 annual fee, it?s important to see how you would get more than $95 of value. Even if you spent just $100 per month on groceries, which is $100 x 3 points per $1 x 12 = 3600 points, $50 per month on gas, which is $50 x 2 points per $1 x 12, and $400 per month on other expenses, you would earn 9600 points, enough to cover the $95 annual fee in travel redemption, which is valuing Amex points conservatively at one cent per point. If you don?t think you?ll spend ($400 + $100 + $50) x 12 = $6600 per year, you will definitely want to opt for a no annual fee card. Or, if you don?t travel at all, you will want to get a card with 1 point per $1 cash back redemption.

Unfortunately, you cannot redeem rewards for statement credit in the traditional sense with Amex EveryDay? Preferred, instead you pay for eligible purchases with rewards, and you get 0.6 cents per point. Nonetheless, using points on amextravel.com for 1 cent per point or transferring to airline partners to get about 1 cent per point on partner airfare makes Amex EveryDay? Preferred a good travel card, considering the 50% points bonus and the opportunity to earn 4.5X on supermarkets and 3X on gas.

If you spend a lot on groceries and gas and like to travel, Amex EveryDay? Preferred is a great card for you.

Pros

  • 3x points at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases
  • Earn 15,000 Membership Rewards? Points after you use your new Card to make $1,000 in purchases in your first 3 months

Cons

  • Cannot redeem rewards for statement credit, instead you apply rewards directly to pay for eligible purchases

Is SunTrust Cash Rewards Credit Card worth it?

SunTrust Cash Rewards Credit Card is a great card for people looking to get cash back on gas and groceries. Cardholders earn 5% Cash Back on up to $6,000 spent on gas and grocery qualifying purchases in the first 12 months.

For comparison, the Discover it Cash Back offers the same cash back percentage, 5%, and the same total maximum, $6000. However, Discover it Cash Back cardholders get cash back on rotating categories with a $1500 quarterly maximum and it continues in the second year. Discover it Cash Back customers have a different sign up offer which is the Discover it Cash Back Match, which only happens after the first 12 months.

SunTrust Cash Rewards Credit Card is still a great card for most people, because if you don’t travel often gas and groceries are two of the highest spending categories that are paid with a credit card.

Utilities, rent, a mortgage, or an auto loan, are big monthly costs, but if they charge fees on credit card transactions, which they typically do, it’s not recommended to regularly pay them with a credit card unless it is to reach the spending limit for a valuable sign up bonus.

With no annual fee and 0% Intro APR for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers, this is a great card for most people who don’t need travel but want cash back on common monthly purchases.

Pros

  • Cash rewards don’t expire
  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Get cash back deposited in your bank account or statement credit for a minimum of a $5 redemption amount
  • You can earn a Loyalty Cash Bonus of 10%, 25%, or 50% if you redeem through an ACH deposit into a SunTrust deposit account

Cons

  • 5% cash back on gas and groceries only for 12 months
