Is American Express Business Platinum Card worth it?

Business Platinum from American Express is a great charge card for business travelers who travel often enough to gain rewards that more than make up for the $595 annual fee. Cardholders earn 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar on flights and prepaid hotels on amextravel.com.

If you need to carry a balance, you can use American Express’ Pay Over Time feature at an APR of 19.74%. You essentially now have a credit card, but not all charges will get carried over into the next month. You choose between the Extended Payment Option, where charges over $100 are automatically moved into your Pay Over Time balance, Select & Pay Later, where you manually choose charges over $100 to move into your Pay Over Time balance, or Sign & Travel, where airline tickets, hotel stays, car rentals, cruises and charges in other countries are moved into your Pay Over Time balance. It’s not the simplest program but whichever choice you select, you basically now have a credit card, where you can choose to pay the full balance, the minimum payment, or anything in between. This is in contrast to what would normally happen with a charge card, where you are required to pay the full balance every month, and if you don’t, you incur a late fee even if you pay an amount that would be above what would be considered the normal minimum payment if the card were a credit card. Charge cards also don’t impact your credit, because you are not extended a credit line.

Pros

  • 5X points on airfare and prepaid hotel rooms on AmexTravel.com
  • High Intro bonus of up to 100,000 bonus points – 50,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 and an extra 50,000 points after you spend an additional $15,000 all on qualifying purchases in first 90 days after account opening
  • No foreign transaction fees

Cons

  • $595 Annual fee
  • Not the highest unlimited rewards rate on all other purchases

Is United MileagePlus Club Card worth it?

United MileagePlus Club is a great card for people who are looking for United Club or Star Alliance affiliated lounge membership. Star Alliance members include Asiana Airlines, Avianca, Lufthansa, Swiss Air, Thai Airways, and more than 10 more. Consumers have reported that some of these lounges are better than United lounges, so this is a major perk.

Note that if you already have a United Club membership, you will be reimbursed for the unused portion of your membership once you’re approved for the card. However, if you are not interested in United Club membership at all, other cards will earn you a higher rewards rate.

United MileagePlus Club cardholders earn 1.5 miles per $1 spent on all other purchases and United Miles are worth about one to one and a half cents depending on if you redeem for the cheaper Saver fare or for the Everyday fare, which has more availability, so while 1.5 miles on every purchase is a great rewards rate on everyday spending it’s only about 1.5 – 2.25% back. Premium flyers would be able to get 3X points on travel and dining using the $450 annual fee Chase Sapphire Reserve at 4.5% back and 5X Membership Rewards points on flights booked directly with an airline or with American Express Travel using the $550 annual fee Amex Platinum at 5% back.

United MileagePlus Club has a $450 annual fee, so on rewards alone it doesn’t compare favorably with these cards for people who will be flying a lot and therefore earning a lot of travel rewards at a high rate. However, if you fly United often and will use the United Club or Star Alliance affiliated lounges, United MileagePlus Club is a solid premium travel card for you.

Pros

  • 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open
  • 1.5 miles per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Access to United Club locations and participating Star Alliance affiliated lounges worldwide
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Redeem points on Star Alliance Partner airlines including Asiana Airlines, Avianca, Lufthansa, Swiss Air, Thai Airways, and more than 10 more.

Cons

  • $450 annual fee
  • You have to be flying United or a Star Alliance carrier to be able to use United Club
  • No Global Entry/TSA Precheck application credits

Is United MileagePlus Club Business Card worth it?

United MileagePlus Club Business is a solid card for business travelers who would like United Club or Star Alliance affiliated lounge access. Cardholders get access to United Club locations and participating Star Alliance affiliated lounges worldwide. If you were to purchase United Club membership, it would cost $650 and one-time passes are $59.

Cardholders earn 2 miles per $1 spent on United purchases. The signup bonus of 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 is worth at least $300. Note the $450 annual fee does not count toward the signup bonus. This is the case for almost all credit cards. The value of United Miles now depend on the exact flight you book. However, the former award chart, on which points had a fixed value, gives a good indicator of what to expect.

Let’s say you are flying between New York/Newark and San Francisco. Because this is a premium route, 10,000 extra miles are required. On an Everyday Fare, you would pay 60,000 miles and on a Savor Fare you would pay 35,000 miles. The cost of this flight is about $550 roundtrip, so the value of a point would be between about one cent and one and a half cents.

United’s MileagePlus rewards program is relatively simple. United offers Saver and Everyday Awards. Saver Awards cost fewer miles, but they have limited availability and are less likely to be available closer to flight time. On the other hand, MileagePlus Premier members and eligible United MileagePlus Chase cardmembers, including cardholders of United MileagePlus Club Business, get to book an Everyday Award even if it’s the last seat on the plane. The program has reasonable terms: all award tickets can be cancelled and the points will be deposited back into your account, and you can even issue a MileagePlus ticket in someone else?s name.

If you’re looking for United Club or Star Alliance affiliated lounge access, United MileagePlus Club Business is a great card for you.

Pros

  • 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open
  • 2 miles per $1 spent on United purchases
  • Access to United Club locations and participating Star Alliance affiliated lounges worldwide
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Redeem points on Star Alliance Partner airlines

Cons

  • $450 annual fee
  • You have to be flying United or a Star Alliance carrier to be able to use United Club
  • No Global Entry/TSA Precheck application credits

Is UBS Visa Infinite Credit Card worth it?

UBS Visa Infinite Credit Card is a solid card for premium travelers. The easiest way to apply for this card is to be a UBS customer and request it through your advisor. However, there have been reports from consumers that you can call and request it as well.

Cardholders earn 3x points for commercial air travel. Note that air travel through online sites other than the airlines? own sites may not qualify. If you’re familiar with Visa Signature, you will find similarities with Visa Infinite cards. While the benefits in Visa Signature are generally practical in nature, you will get all of these benefits plus primary auto rental collision damage waiver, meaning it pays out before your own insurance, as well as a number of premium benefits with Visa Infinite.

For example, with access to the Visa Luxury Hotel Collection being granted by both Visa Signature and Visa Infinite, with Visa Infinite you get an additional premium benefit: your choice of a $75 Food & Beverage credit on top of the $25 credit you already get, or a $100 spa, golf, or room rate credit. You also get Priority Pass membership with 6 complimentary visits and 40% off on rentals at SilverCar by Audi when you pay with your card.

UBS Visa Infinite has a number of luxury perks like this, but if you’re just after the rewards rate, you might consider a competitor card like American Express Platinum, or understandably Chase Sapphire Reserve, which offers a valuable rewards program but also comes with Visa Infinite benefits. Both Amex Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards points have a value about equal to UBS when redeemed for travel and can be earned at almost the same rate.

However, if you spend a lot on airfare and hotels, Amex Platinum, for a $550 annual fee, is a great choice, because it earns 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel, getting you about a 5% rewards rate, which is in most cases the highest rate you will see.

On the other hand, Chase Sapphire Reserve has a lower $450 annual fee and is generally known to have better airline transfer partners than either Amex Platinum or UBS Visa Infinite, and Sapphire Reserve earns 3 points per dollar on travel and dining, plus a 50% bonus when redeemed on Chase Ultimate Rewards, earning you a 4.5% rewards rate.

That said, you may be exclusively interested in UBS Visa Infinite, whether it is because you are an existing UBS customer or because you were recommended the card by a friend. One nice perk is UBS Visa Infinite’s lack of ATM fees. UBS is able to rebate ATM fees in cases where the transaction fee surcharge is submitted to UBS by the ATM operator and/or network used. They’re also willing to work with you over the phone if you have a problem getting the rebate, but you do need to make sure your UBS credit card is linked to a Resource Management Account or Business Services Account to reclaim the fee.

Getting the most out of UBS Visa Infinite also will require understanding point values when redeeming points for airfare. You can redeem 25,000 rewards points for one ticket up to $350 on any commercial airline. Or you can redeem 50,000 rewards points for one ticket up to $900. That rewards rate is 1.4 cents per point for the $350 ticket and 1.8 cents per point for the $900 ticket. If your flight costs a little more than $350 or $900, you must redeem more points at a rate of 5,000 points for each additional $50 in ticket value, bringing your rewards rate down closer to 1%, or one cent per point. In other words, if you can redeem points for $350 or $900, you will get the most value out of your points, with $900 redemptions being the most valuable.

For private flyers, there are exclusive Wheels Up and NetJets benefit options. If you are in airports often and have spent $50,000 or greater during either the current calendar year-to-date or the prior calendar year, you may enjoy the $500 statement credit valid for airport club day passes or an annual club fee. If you don’t meet that spend threshold, you will need to use the 6 complimentary Priority Pass passes also included.

There are other options in the premium travel card niche like Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve, but if you want Visa Infinite benefits and like UBS, UBS Visa Infinite is a solid card for you.

Pros

  • $250 credit for any qualifying air travel expenses
  • Earn 3x points for commercial air travel
  • 2x points for gas and groceries

The card also offers you an average value of $500 in travel benefits and services per 3-day hotel stay. Amenities and services may include resort or spa credits, complimentary food and beverages, room upgrades and welcome perks. The rewards rate for Mastercard Black Card is lower than average: cardholders earn one point for every one dollar you spend, but for cardholders who take advantage of all the perks, the $495 annual fee could be justified.
