Is American Express Blue Business Plus worth it?

American Express Blue Business Cash is a solid starter card for businesses with 2X Membership Rewards points on everyday business purchases up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1X on all purchases thereafter. That means any purchase you make for your business will earn 2X points.

To earn 2X Membership Rewards points and get their face value, you must redeem them for eligible purchases, such as air, prepaid hotels, vacation packages (flight + hotel packages) or cruise reservations. Those categories cover almost everything in travel, but it’s important to note that for car reservations, non-prepaid hotels, and ticketing services, your points have half the value.

With no annual fee and a 12 month intro period on purchases and balance transfers, this may be a good card for someone starting a business who travels. This card is almost identical to American Express Blue Business Cash, except as noted it earns American Express Membership Rewards points, which have the highest value when redeemed for travel, instead of cash back.

Pros

  • 2X Membership Rewards points on everyday business purchases up to $50,000
  • Allows some spending above your credit limit
  • No annual fee

Cons

  • Lower than average ongoing travel rewards rate

Is Wells Fargo Business Elite Signature worth it?

Wells Fargo Business Elite Signature is a great card for business owners with annual sales over $1 million who want to effectively manage their company credit cards. You can manage spending, payments, and transfers online, pay bills direct with your card over the phone, make automatic payments, and avoid overdrafts and returned check fees with overdraft protection. You can also choose between consolidated billing or individual cardholder billing.

Many of these features are standard for business cards, but you also get Business Elite Online Reporting, which allows you to track and manage cardholder spending, payments, and other transactions, analyze spending by category, view spending by merchant, and create custom reporting. Business Spending Report is available through your online account and allows you to see your categorized business card transactions and set monthly goals.

Furthermore you can assign spending controls to each card on the account, such as office administration, which allows only office-related purchases such as printing, copying, and equipment rentals. Or, travel, which is deal for employees who travel for business purposes. There is even a feature to limit spending to business hours only.

As for the value of the card itself, cardholders receive 1.5% cash back on every $1 spent or earn 1 point on every $1 spent. You can choose whether you want points or cash back. While cash back is the most flexible redemption option, there are some benefits to the points program.

For example, you get a 10% point credit when you redeem points online. You also earn extra bonus points or discounts from Earn More Mall retailers, such as 3 points per $1 at Staples, 2 points per $1 at Expedia, and 10 points per dollar at 24 hour Fitness.

To redeem for travel through Wells Fargo Rewards, standard airfare starts at 25,000 points for a domestic round-trip flight on any major airline. This is conservatively a 1.5 cent per point value, which is good for any type of standard redemption, including travel.

When booking travel online at wellsfargorewards.com, you can pay with rewards Points, cash or a combination of both, which is a nice feature not shared by every rewards program. If you choose to opt for cash back instead of points, you receive your cash back automatically as a credit to your statement or to your eligible checking or savings account each quarter: March, June, September, and December. Note that you must stay in the cash back program during the intro period to keep the cash back; you cannot switch to the points program until the 3 months has completed. As you might have expected, cash back is earned and transferred to the primary Business Elite Card account from employee accounts.

The overarching theme of Wells Fargo Business Elite Signature is flexibility for the business owner. If you have annual sales over $1 million and are less concerned about rewards (there are much higher rewards rate available with other annual fee business cards) and more concerned about keeping track of your spending and possibly setting spending controls, Wells Fargo Business Elite Signature is a great card for you.

Pros

  • Get a one-time $1,000 cash back bonus or 100,000 bonus points when you spend $15,000 in the first three months of account open date
  • Earn 1.5% cash back on every $1 spent or earn 1 point on every $1 spent
  • Visa Signature benefits
  • Up to 200 employee cards for free
  • No foreign transaction fee

Cons

  • $125 annual fee starting the second year
  • $24 airline ticket redemption fee
  • Cannot redeem travel rewards online, must call Wells Fargo Go Far Rewards customer service

  • The primary Cardmember who is also a MileagePlus Premier member and traveling on an award ticket can take advantage of Complimentary Premier Upgrades on United flights (when available)

Is United MileagePlus Club Card worth it?

United MileagePlus Club is a great card for people who are looking for United Club or Star Alliance affiliated lounge membership. Star Alliance members include Asiana Airlines, Avianca, Lufthansa, Swiss Air, Thai Airways, and more than 10 more. Consumers have reported that some of these lounges are better than United lounges, so this is a major perk.

Note that if you already have a United Club membership, you will be reimbursed for the unused portion of your membership once you’re approved for the card. However, if you are not interested in United Club membership at all, other cards will earn you a higher rewards rate.

United MileagePlus Club cardholders earn 1.5 miles per $1 spent on all other purchases and United Miles are worth about one to one and a half cents depending on if you redeem for the cheaper Saver fare or for the Everyday fare, which has more availability, so while 1.5 miles on every purchase is a great rewards rate on everyday spending it’s only about 1.5 – 2.25% back. Premium flyers would be able to get 3X points on travel and dining using the $450 annual fee Chase Sapphire Reserve at 4.5% back and 5X Membership Rewards points on flights booked directly with an airline or with American Express Travel using the $550 annual fee Amex Platinum at 5% back.

United MileagePlus Club has a $450 annual fee, so on rewards alone it doesn’t compare favorably with these cards for people who will be flying a lot and therefore earning a lot of travel rewards at a high rate. However, if you fly United often and will use the United Club or Star Alliance affiliated lounges, United MileagePlus Club is a solid premium travel card for you.

Pros

  • 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open
  • 1.5 miles per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Access to United Club locations and participating Star Alliance affiliated lounges worldwide
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Redeem points on Star Alliance Partner airlines including Asiana Airlines, Avianca, Lufthansa, Swiss Air, Thai Airways, and more than 10 more.

Cons

  • $450 annual fee
  • You have to be flying United or a Star Alliance carrier to be able to use United Club
  • No Global Entry/TSA Precheck application credits

Is United MileagePlus Club Business Card worth it?

United MileagePlus Club Business is a solid card for business travelers who would like United Club or Star Alliance affiliated lounge access. Cardholders get access to United Club locations and participating Star Alliance affiliated lounges worldwide. If you were to purchase United Club membership, it would cost $650 and one-time passes are $59.

Cardholders earn 2 miles per $1 spent on United purchases. The signup bonus of 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 is worth at least $300. Note the $450 annual fee does not count toward the signup bonus. This is the case for almost all credit cards. The value of United Miles now depend on the exact flight you book. However, the former award chart, on which points had a fixed value, gives a good indicator of what to expect.

Let’s say you are flying between New York/Newark and San Francisco. Because this is a premium route, 10,000 extra miles are required. On an Everyday Fare, you would pay 60,000 miles and on a Savor Fare you would pay 35,000 miles. The cost of this flight is about $550 roundtrip, so the value of a point would be between about one cent and one and a half cents.

United’s MileagePlus rewards program is relatively simple. United offers Saver and Everyday Awards. Saver Awards cost fewer miles, but they have limited availability and are less likely to be available closer to flight time. On the other hand, MileagePlus Premier members and eligible United MileagePlus Chase cardmembers, including cardholders of United MileagePlus Club Business, get to book an Everyday Award even if it’s the last seat on the plane. The program has reasonable terms: all award tickets can be cancelled and the points will be deposited back into your account, and you can even issue a MileagePlus ticket in someone else?s name.

If you’re looking for United Club or Star Alliance affiliated lounge access, United MileagePlus Club Business is a great card for you.

Pros

  • 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open
  • 2 miles per $1 spent on United purchases
  • Access to United Club locations and participating Star Alliance affiliated lounges worldwide
  • No foreign transaction fee

Is U.S. Bank Business Select Rewards Card worth it?

U.S. Bank Business Select Rewards is a solid card for people who want flexibility to choose a 3X points category. The options are day-to-day expenses, automotive, or travel and entertainment.

Day-to-day expenses include shipping, advertising, utilities, office supply, telecom and professional services businesses. Automotive includes gas and service stations, tire shops, car dealerships, car wash facilities, toll gates and car repair establishments. Travel and Entertainment includes airline, hotel, car rental, restaurant and travel agencies. Note that if you are considering a large purchase and expecting to earn rewards, make sure you check their Merchant Classification Code to confirm that they fall in the category you have selected. U.S. Bank Business Select Rewards is very similar to U.S. Bank Business Leverage Visa Signature, which allows business owners 2X rewards on the two categories in which they spent the most and also has no annual fee.

In terms of redemption, U.S. Bank Business Select hotel, car rental, and airfare rewards are worth $0.009 per point. In other words, 50,000 points gets you up to $450 in airfare, and 25,000 points gets you up to $225 in hotel cost or car rental cost. Gifts cards will get a lower redemption value. While you can purchase points, it’s not recommended because each point is priced at 3 cents, more than 3 times the value of earning points via purchases.

U.S. Bank Business Select Rewards also comes with Encore Relationship Rewards, which gives you rewards for taking payments. If you spend $1,000 in the first 90 days on the card, you earn 20,000 points, worth up to $180 in travel. You can choose to redeem points as cash back and statement credit, although reports from consumers have indicated this gets you significantly lower value.

If you don’t want to pay an annual fee for a business card and you have one predominant category of expenses that you would like to earn 3X travel rewards on, U.S. Bank Business Select Rewards is a solid card for you.

Pros

  • Earn 20,000 extra points when you spend $1,000 in eligible net purchases within the first 90 days
  • Choose your 3X points category: day-to-day expenses, automotive or travel and entertainment
  • No annual fee

Cons

  • Gift cards and cash back have lower redemption value than travel, which includes airfare, hotels, and car rentals

Is JetBlue Business Card worth it?

JetBlue Business Card is a great card for JetBlue business travelers. Cardholders earn 50,000 points after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days and earn 10,000 additional points when a purchase is made on an employee card in the first 90 days.

To find out how much 60,000 points is worth, we looked at the price of a roundtrip flight from ORD Chicago O?Hare to MCO Orlando International Airport departing on Christmas and returning on New Year?s Day booked two months in advance. The cost would be 106,200 points or $1108, valuing the points on one cent apiece and making the 60,000 signup bonus worth $600 in JetBlue travel.

Now to find out if the card is worth renewing for $99, let’s assume you travel six times a year on flights having the same value as the example, $1108 and you don’t use this card for any other purchases. If you use points to book three of those six flights, which won’t earn you more points, and use JetBlue Business Card to book the three other flights, your three flights booked with JetBlue Business Card would earn you $550 in JetBlue travel.

If you add the 5,000 bonus points every year after your account anniversary, which is worth $50 as long as you use it, you have $600 in JetBlue travel. This is enough for a one-way ticket portion of the $1108 flight example we have been using from Chicago to Orlando.

On this flight, the one-way tickets cost the same as for the roundtrip, so you could book one flight with points and the other with your JetBlue Business Card and you will have successfully redeemed $600 in JetBlue travel, more than paying for the $99 annual fee. One-way tickets are typically a little more expensive if they are premium tickets typically purchased by business travelers, but less expensive for discount airlines. What this means for you is that if you are set on flying in first class or business class, which is called Mint on JetBlue, you may have to earn more points to make sure you have enough for the flight you want.

Note that when you book a JetBlue flight, three popular options for the regular class seating are the Blue fare, Blue Plus Fare, or Blue Flex fare. The item that might make the biggest difference in choosing between the options is checked bags.

Checked bags are typically $30 for the first bag and $40 for the second bag. The Blue fare doesn’t include checked bags, while the Blue Plus fare includes one free checked bag and costs about $15 more than the Blue fare, which makes it a financial sensible option. The Blue Flex fare includes two free checked bags and costs about $100 more than a Blue fare. $100 is more than just paying for the checked bags would cost, but you also get no change fees and free same-day changes.

Change fees are relatively complicated, because they increase with flight price. For example, the lowest tier, for fares up to $99, has change fees which are $75 for Plus and Blue. The highest tier, for fares $200 or more, has change fees which are $200. Same-day changes cost $75, but again on Blue Flex they are free.

While the normal rate is 6X points on JetBlue purchases, Blue Plus earns you 7X and Blue Flex earn 8x. You also get 300 points for every JetPaws fee, the JetBlue program to bring your pet to your destination with you, which is $125 each way.

After spending $50,000 or more on purchases each calendar year, you earn Mosaic benefits, which include a free first and second checked bag, no change and cancellation fees for anyone on the itinerary, early boarding, an expedited security checkpoint line, and complimentary alcoholic beverages onboard.

If you fly JetBlue regularly for business, this is a great card for you.

Is Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business Credit Card worth it?

Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business is a great card for business owners who fly Southwest. Cardholders earn 1,500 tier qualifying points for each $10,000 in purchases up to $100,000 in purchases annually which equal 15,000 TQP. The lower tier, A-list status – which gets you priority boarding and free same-day standby for an earlier flight going to the same destination among other perks – requires 35,000 tier qualifying points, so it will take more than one year to achieve this goal, but you can stack another card what earns tier qualifying points, namely the Rapid Rewards Priority Card or Rapid Rewards Premier Card, to earn faster.

You can also achieve A-list status by flying 25 one-way qualifying flights, which most people will find fits their spending more naturally. As for the value of the Rapid Rewards points you get, with Southwest Rapid Rewards points being worth about 1.5 cents per point, the bonus is worth 60,000 x $0.015 = $900 in Southwest travel.

Cardholders earn 2 Rapid Rewards points for every $1 you spend on Southwest Airlines? purchases. Points count towards the Companion Pass, which allows you to bring a friend on any Southwest flight with you for a year. This can be a big deal for companies who typically travel with multiple employees as you would be saving hundreds of dollars every flight. It takes 125,000 points to earn the pass or 100 qualifying one-way flights.

While you can’t earn Rapid Rewards points on other airlines, you can transfer points into Rapid Rewards. For example, Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be converted to Rapid Rewards Points on a 1:1 ratio. Note that you can only book rewards flights on Southwest, so we literally mean it when we say it?s for business owners who fly Southwest.

Pros

  • Rapid Rewards do not expire
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be converted to Rapid Rewards Points on a 1:1 ratio
  • Points earned count towards Companion Pass – the benefit that lets a friend fly with you free of airline charges for a year
  • You?ll earn 1,500 tier qualifying points (TQPs) for each $10,000 in purchases up to $100,000 in purchases annually which equal 15,000 TQP. TQPs can be used to count toward qualification for Rapid Rewards A-List or A-List Preferred status

Is Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Business worth it?

Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Business Card is a solid card for Korean Air business travelers. Cards can be issued to employees authorized by the business owner. Cardholders earn 30,000 SKYPASS Bonus Miles after you spend $3,000 within first 90 days and 2 miles for every $1 you spend in eligible net purchases. There is a $95 annual fee for year, and every year after it will be $95 for Account Owners and $95 for Authorized Employees.

Cardholders receive $50 off a Korean Air ticket purchase each year and 2,000 Bonus Miles at renewal. This is not a great bonus, but note that Korean Air miles are worth more than miles from the average travel rewards program. For example, the 30,000 point sign up bonus may look smaller than normal for a sign up bonus, but it is worth enough to get you a roundtrip flight from South Korea to Japan.

Pros

  • SkyTeam transfer partners include Aeromexico, Air France, China Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and more than 5 more.
  • Earn 30,000 SKYPASS Bonus Miles after you spend $3,000 within first 90 days
  • Earn 2 miles for every $1 you spend in Korean Air ticket purchases, gas stations, and hotels
  • No foreign transaction fee

Cons

  • $95 annual fee
  • SKYPASS miles cannot be used in combination with cash to book Korean Air flights: the flight must be booked entirely with miles or cash
