6 Valuable Metal Credit Cards You Should Apply For In 2020

There are plenty of credit cards that might be worth applying for. To make a good decision, it?s important to take into account practical considerations like your credit score and what you spend most of your money on – gas, groceries, travel, etc.

Unfortunately, even after narrowing down on the cards you can get and examining a card’s financial value based on your particular spending habits, you may find that the actual card you ultimately receive in the mail doesn’t seem to weigh up to the financial value if offers you. Even cards that have excellent perks and benefits are often made out of weak plastic material or otherwise poorly constructed.

However, there are a handful credit cards that are both a savvy financial decision and also built to last; in particular, they tend to be made out of metal. These cards don?t wear out so easily and are also frankly just more impressive when you whip them out of your wallet.

To find out which top cards appear the most valuable, in addition to backing up their impressive appearance with real financial value, we looked at the most popular metal credit cards on the market to help answer your questions about which cards are worth getting and what makes them well constructed.

First, let?s get to some common questions.

Can you get a 24k gold credit card?

Yes. There is a 24k gold credit card from Luxury Card issued by Barclays called the Mastercard? Gold Card?. The Gold Card is made with a 24k-gold-plated stainless steel front and a carbon back. This card has a $995 annual fee, and it’s $295 to add each authorized user. In our opinion, this card is not worth the annual fee unless you overvalue the fact that it contains gold. Here are the details:

If you like the Gold Card’s features and benefits (which you see on the card details page by clicking the link above) – which we do think are excellent for luxury customers who travel regardless of the card’s flashy construction and high price – Luxury Card has two other models that offer a similar value at a lower annual fee that are built with less valuable metals. There is the Mastercard? Black Card?, composed of stainless steel, with a $495 annual fee, and the Mastercard? Titanium Card?, composed of brushed stainless steel, at a $195 annual fee.

The stainless steel Black Card actually offers the same features and benefits as the Gold Card, but for $500 less, presumably partly due to the cost to gold-plate the front of a credit card. If you don’t think gold plating a credit card is worth $500, you’ll want to get the Black Card.

Are there any credit cards that are entirely metal?

There are no major credit cards that are entirely metal. Most cards are made with metal-alloy. This means the metal that the card is titled after, for example, in the case of the Mastercard? Titanium Card that would be titanium, is only one component in the mix of metal materials composing the card. In other words, the metal alloy comprising Mastercard? Titanium Card might contain just a trace of titanium. The exact alloy used in the Mastercard? Titanium Card is stainless steel, which is used in several popular metal credit cards. Although it’s often asked, we’re not aware of any credit cards that contain aluminum.

The one challenge with stainless steel is that with a lot of use it can rust and show scratches. The rust could begin at the corners of your stainless steel credit card, although it’s rare for rust to occur at all. If the card doesn’t rust and you mostly use it for chip and pin or contactless transactions where it won’t have the danger of getting scratched during the swipe, it will look new for a long time.

Note that there are a couple of differences in the type of stainless steel used in cards. For example, the Mastercard? Titanium Card has a “brushed stainless steel front,” while the Black card and Gold card have just a “stainless steel front” (the stainless steel on the Gold card is gold plated and the Black card is PVD-coated). The brushed stainless steel on the Titanium card is even less likely to rust and could stay even more scratch-free as you use the card a lot. It’s also less reflective, and it can look cleaner, because it hides fingerprints.

If you’re curious as to what the Luxury Cards cards look like, take a look at these videos. The first video shows the MasterCard Gold Card, and you can notice at 31 seconds into this unboxing video that the gold plating is definitely reflective.

In contrast, the Titanium card is non-reflective. It has brushed stainless steel to make it less likely to corrode. You can see how dull and non-reflective it looks in the light at 17 seconds into this video.

Meanwhile, the Black card is not brushed. It’s PVD-coated. Physical vapor decomposition helps the card resist wear-and-tear. At 21 seconds into the last video you can see the PVD-coated stainless steel front and the carbon fiber back layers clearly.

If you like a slightly reflective look – but again, Gold is too much for you – then the Black card may be the best choice. At 18 seconds into this video, you can see the slight reflectivity of the non-brushed stainless steel on the Black card.

The Luxury Cards are by no means the only cards made of metal, or even the only cards made of stainless steel in particular. They happen to specifically highlight their construction as a key feature in both their name and in their promotional materials, so they are good cards to demonstrate different stainless steel finishes used in other cards.

While the Luxury Cards are on the MasterCard network, there are a number of cards on the American Express network. The most famous metal card from American Express is the Centurion? Card, also known as the Amex Black Card.

How To Check Your Chase Credit Card Application Status

If you just applied for a Chase credit card, you can check your application status online or by phone.

  1. If you already have a Chase account, you may want to choose the online option, and if it’s a basic Chase account, you will be able to find a link titled ‘Check my application(s) status’ on the right hand side in your portal. If it’s a Chase Private Client Account, you will see a tab titled ‘Application Status’ on the left hand side.

To set up an account, go here and enter your application reference number, or another identifying number, such as that of an investment or checking account, or a mortgage or auto loan. You will also be asked for your social security number or tax id number.

    Chase Account Registration
  2. If you don’t have an account with Chase and would prefer not to set an account up at this time, you can call 1-888-338-2586 to reach the automated Cardmember Services Application Status line directly. This is the official Chase application status number, where you will be asked to enter your social security number to link your SSN and identify your chase account.

You can also reach this app approval status line by calling Chase Card Services at 1-800-432-3117. Currently, you need to press # for application status, then “3”, but that could change. By the way, this is a number to keep in mind, because it is also the number to call if you need to report your card as lost or stolen.

If you have time to wait to receive the card, you won’t need to check your status and can just wait to receive the decision. You will automatically receive a letter from Chase within 7-10 days with your decision enclosed. Keep in mind you will not be able to track your card to see when it shipped and where it is.

In some cases you will receive an email soon after you apply stating that you will receive a decision in 30 business days. If you call the status line and enter your SSN, you may be told that you will be notified in 2 weeks or you may be told it will be 7-10 business days.

In other words, you may get conflicting information, and it’s normal to not have a firm date.

Recognize that just because you receive an email saying your application is under review and it will take 7-10 days, you are not necessarily denied. Some people do get an approval email the same day, but others take longer. There are several reasons your application might take extra time.

As a friendly reminder, check if you had your credit reports locked, which would make Chase unable to check your credit and approve you for the card.

Alternatively, you may have recent credit inquiries on your credit report and Chase would like to confirm that you do not represent a risk.

Or, Chase may need to verify your address if you recently moved, or verify your income in which case you may be asked for a pay stub or other proof of income like federal tax returns. As long as you include your application reference number when you send in your verification information, there’s a good chance this is all Chase needed and you will be approved.

In other cases, there is not a noted reason and just calling Chase Card Services at 1-800-432-3117 and talking through your application status with the representative will result in immediate approval.

At this point, the only extra step to complete may be to get on the phone with Card Services and read back a text message that they sent you as a verification measure.

Pro Tip: If you have had a Chase card in the past and you are approved for your new card, you may ask for expedited shipping, which will take 2-3 business days. This is at no cost to you. This is available for replacement cards as well.

Of course, you may receive a denial. If the reason for denial is not representative of your ability to pay your Chase card balance and your credit score is 700 or above, it would be smart to call the reconsideration line.

Calling The Chase Reconsideration Line

If you are denied, you want to call the Chase Reconsideration Line for personal cards at 1-800-270-2127. You will hear a prompt asking if you are calling about a recent correspondence or message, including a reference number.

This number will work for Chase Freedom, Chase Slate, Chase Sapphire, and all Chase cards, including the Amazon Visa cards, Disney Visa or Southwest Airlines cards, and is open from 9am – 5pm every day. For business cards, call 1-800-453-9719 in the afternoon starting after 1pm for business cards. The hours stated by Chase are longer, but some applicants have noted the most success calling in the hours above. The automated prompt is the same for both numbers.

As a second option, you can call 1-888-245-0625, where you are likely to get an analyst who can review your application in detail.

One possible reason for denial that we have not brought up thus far is opening too many Chase credit cards in too short a time. In order to approve you for a new card, Chase requires that you have not opened more than 5 personal credit cards in 24 months across all banks. This is called the 5/24 rule, and it means that even if you close accounts, they will still count as once opened. American Express, Bank of America, Citi, and Capital One also have documented card limit rules.

Pro Tip: If you have a Chase card open and you are approved for a new Chase card but at a credit limit that is lower than you need, you can call reconsideration and ask for a credit reallocation from the other card to the new card.

How To Check Your American Express Credit Card Application Status

You can check your American Express application status online or by phone.

  1. To check online, go here. You will only need to provide your social security number and zip code.

Pro Tip: Even though the page mentions you cannot check balance transfer status here, if you have existing cards and have a pending balance transfer request you can in fact click “check application” and find a link for you to check the balance transfer status for an existing card just inside the portal.

    Check American Express Application Status
  2. Call the American Express automated application status line at 1-866-314-0237.

Instant approvals are common with American Express, especially if you have excellent credit, but if you receive the “in progress” status, there may be a few reasons you were not immediately approved and that your application was flagged. First, if you have recently built credit up from scratch in last the past six months – this is unlikely to be the case for most applicants – or if you have applied for another card within the past six months, in either case there would be a recent change on your credit report that may be delaying the application.

Alternatively, you may have entered your post office box instead of your home address as your mailing address. You may have to send proof of your mailing address by providing a bill with your name on it or even a notarized bank statement.

Finally, another reason for a delayed application would be if you had applied for an American Express card recently, as you may be flagged for multiple applications. If you have more than four American Express credit cards (charge cards don’t count and have their own limit of four) across personal and business, you will most likely be flat out denied.

Or, you may need to verify your identity by providing passport or other uniquely identifying information, which could be as simple as your date of birth and address.

All of these scenarios might have gotten your application flagged as fraud and would be reason to call the American Express Application Status number (remember to provide your application reference ID) at 1-866-314-0237 to expedite the processing of your application and get it approved.

Pro Tip: 866-314-0237 is the same phone number you would call to find out your credit limit, which you would want to know if you approved. After 60 days, you can request a credit limit that is up to three times higher than the limit you are initially given. You can also reallocate your credit limit online here if you have other American Express cards, but note you can’t transfer credit from business to personal cards.

You may receive a message that you have to wait 14 days for your application to be reviewed. This does not necessarily mean you are denied. If you applied for other American Express cards recently, American Express may simply have to verify that you meant to apply for this card as well.

Another possible scenario is that you may be asked to submit additional documentation, such as other accounts you have open along with the credit utilization of each account. You could be asked to provide proof of income in the form of a pay stub, tax return, W-2, or through bank statements.

Lastly, if you receive the “cancelled” status, it is likely there is a mistake in the content you provided in your application or it may just be that your identity couldn’t be verified.

Calling The American Express Credit Card Reconsideration Line

If you are denied and you believe this was unexpected or you have a change to report, such as an income increase, you can call the American Express reconsideration and new accounts line at 800-567-1083 for personal cards. For business cards, call 1-800-567-1085.

If you call reconsideration and are recommended for approval, your status will change to ‘in progress’ until a final decision is made.

If you are approved, your card will be mailed out of Omaha, Nebraska in a white envelope with an American Express logo, and you will receive it in 7-10 days. Once you receive your card, you can set up your online account here.

How To Check Your Bank of America Credit Card Application Status

You can check your Bank of America application status online for personal cards and online and via phone for business cards.

  1. Check online here by entering your last name, date of birth, last 4 digits of your social security number, and your zip code.

Bank of America Application Log In

    2. There is a phone line for personal cards at 800-545-7899 that offers a prompt for checking your application status (currently you Press 3, but that could change). However, the response is an automated message that it may take up to 30 days for you to receive a decision and that you can monitor your status online.

However, for business cards, you can call 866-695-6598, where you will hear an automated message to call back if it’s been less than 48 hours since you submitted your application. Then, you will be connected to a business card representative.

If you receive the message that your application is in review, it’s not necessarily a denial. Calling Bank of America can increase your changes of getting approved if it isn’t yet clear what is causing the delay. For example, the problem may be as simple as you had applied for two Bank of America cards in a short time period, causing the second application to be flagged as a possible duplicate. Call in and you are likely to get approved in this case.

Or, it could be a lack of credit history or too many recent inquiries; for example, more than 5 inquiries in the past 6 months may be cause for concern. A bankruptcy is especially hard to overcome.

In other cases, it can simply be a fraud check. Often, the representative will ask to verify your identity, at which point you can verify other accounts you hold, or answer questions like ‘which is the bank that originated your mortgage’. Finally, you may be told that the account is under review so that they can take time to determine your credit limit, and you may be offered the card you applied for with a low credit limit, or a different card altogether. There are even scenarios where you may be offered an approval if you secure the card by opening a bank account with them and making a significant deposit.

Pro Tip:

It increases your credit score to have a high credit limit and a low amount of credit utilized. This is called credit utilization. Despite this fact, it is possible to be denied for having too much extended credit. Banks do not disclose their application criteria for legal and competitive reasons, so you will understandably not find this noted in their application material.

If you are denied for this reason, mentioning in your reconsideration call that you will close accounts or reduce the existing credit line on other cards may be recognized as reason to approve your account. Although if you have opened a large number of accounts, this may not be sufficient. Your reconsideration calls do result in notes on your account, so although it can help to call back and make an attempt to add new information, be sure it is truthful information.

Calling The Bank of America Credit Card Reconsideration Line

If you’ve been denied, you can call the personal reconsideration line at 800-354-0401 (alternatively, you can call the general customer service line at 1-800-732-9194 or use the mailing address below). The business reconsideration line is 866-695-6598.

You can mail Bank of America at the address below:

Application status inquiries
Bank of America
PO Box 2493
Norfolk, VA 23501-2493

In general, you will have better odds if you have a current relationship with Bank of America. With that said, if you have five Bank of America personal cards, you will not be able to open more cards.

How To Check Your Barclays Credit Card Application Status

You can check your Barclays application status online and by phone for personal and business cards.

  1. Check online here for personal cards and here for business cards. You will need to enter your last name, last 4 digits of your Social Security Number, zip code, and email.

    Barclays Application Status
    2. You can call Credit Services at 866-408-4064 to check your application status.

As soon as you apply, you may see a message saying your application is being reviewed and will take up to 10 days to receive a decision. If the reason is quantifiable and clear, such as too many accounts opened, you could be denied within days and then receive a letter confirming your denial.

As a friendly reminder, if you have frozen your credit to prevent identity theft, Barclays will be unable to check your credit and make a decision on your application.

If you are approved, you will be able to login and manage your new card. Note that the accounts for personal and business are separate, so if you have a business and a personal card, they will be separate.

Calling The Barclays Credit Card Reconsideration Line

You can call 1-866-710-2688 for both personal and business reconsideration. You may be transferred to the credit or security department depending on your file, according to a Barclays representative we spoke with, but this is where you may be asked general questions about income and the reasons behind card inquiries on your credit report.

If you are a business, understand that you may have to have a phone call where you are asked about your profit margin, employees, and line of business, as well as income provided by a spouse. You could also be asked for a copy of your social security number and license, as well as a bank statement or utility bill, which could confirm your address.

If you are a sole proprietor, this may be a lot of additional documents to provide that do not make sense for your business, and in some cases you may be approved without them.

Barclays is unique in that when you call the reconsideration line (or the Credit Services phone number above, which you can use to check your application status), you will likely get a real person immediately.

How To Check Your Capital One Credit Card Application Status

You can check your Capital One approval status by phone for personal and business cards. You cannot check your status online. During our most recent check on our application status for a card – the phone number is 800-903-9177 or 800-933-5182 – we were on the phone with a representative in the first minute, and we received a result on our application within 2 minutes. To get a representative on the phone, you simply follow the prompts by saying ‘check the status of an application’ and then enter your social security number.

Note that certain questions you may have about your application status, such as recommendations for other cards you might get approved for, as well as questions about changes or opportunities to increase your credit, may get referred to other departments, or even to the credit bureaus. This is not ideal, but the representatives will conveniently transfer you if your question is regarding a Capital One service: for example, CreditWise, their credit monitoring app.

If you applied online, you will generally get a response immediately. Regardless of the decision, you will receive a letter within 7 to 10 days of your application. The letter may request additional documents, such as proof of income, which will delay your application but will likely be quickly verified by Capital One and move your approval forward.

Capital One is sensitive to people with several cards, such as people who like to travel. If you are in this category and have opened a number of credit card accounts in the past 12 months, excellent credit, a long credit history, a high income, and other accounts with Capital One may not be enough to approve your application.

Another sensitive issue unique to Capital One is that when you apply, each credit bureau will get a hard inquiry, also known as a hard pull. When you get a hard pull, your score decreases about 5 points, so each of your 3 scores (one score per bureau) will go down. This is actually not a big deal, because the score that credit card companies use to determine your creditworthiness is a composite of the three bureau scores. Plus, they also take into account your FICO score and the information the company has on file from your applications, so there is no reason to avoid Capital One to escape the three hard pulls, especially given their strong reputation in the credit card space.

Calling The Capital One Credit Card Reconsideration Phone Number

Capital One does not have a dedicated reconsideration line phone number. The most likely number that will help you is 800-625-7866, which is Application Services, where you will be able to speak with an Account Specialist. Note that this is different from the Application Status department, mentioned above, which is 800-903-9177.

If you are an existing Capital One customer, you can call general customer service at 1-800-951-6951, although this may not be the quickest way to get your answer about getting approved, as compared to the specific departments above.

How To Check Your Citi Credit Card Application Status

You can check your Citi application status online and by phone for personal cards and for business cards.

1. Check your application status online here. You will enter your application ID, which was sent to the email you provided when you applied, and your zip code. If you don’t have access to your application ID, you can enter your primary phone number, zip code, and month and year of birth to check your status.
Citi Check Application Status
2. You can call 888-201-4523 for personal cards or 1-800-645-7240 for business cards to learn your credit card application status. In either case, currently the prompt will ask you to first pick your language, then press ‘2’ once (unless you applied for the Citi Costco card, in which case you press ‘1’) and then press ‘2’ again for Application Status, at which point you will be prompted for your social security number. Keep in mind the dial prompts may change.

You will receive your card within 14 days if you are immediately approved. In other cases, the application status will be ‘pending’, and you may be told it will take 7-10 days. There are cases where you will need to verify your identifying information or income, or that it was actually you who applied for the card.

Citi is like the other global banks in that it considers recent hard pull credit inquiries in its application decision. If you have a half dozen or so hard credit inquiries on the credit report that Citi used to make a decision on your application, your application may be denied.

Also, your existing credit line with another bank may not be a factor with Citi, as each bank grades your creditworthiness independently, so don’t count on your status with other banks assisting you towards an approval with Citi.

Calling The Citi Credit Card Reconsideration Phone Number

If you are denied, you can call the Citi reconsideration line at 800-695-5171 for personal cards and 800-288-4653 for business cards.

With Citi, you also may consider contacting the executive review office after you have called the application status and reconsideration phone numbers.

The mailing address is:

CitiBank Executive Review Department
P.O. Box 6000
Sioux Falls, SD 57117

Their phone number is 605-331-1698.

How To Check Your Credit One Credit Card Application Status

You can check your application status by phone or online.

  1. You can check online here. You will need to enter your last name and social security number.

    Credit One Application Status
  2. You can call the Application Information Phone Number at 1-800-752-5493 from 5 am – 9pm Pacific Time Monday – Friday and 6:30am – 5pm on the weekends.

Pro Tip: Like with most banks, before you apply for real with Credit One you may have received a pre-approved offer (this is when you are contacted by the bank and recommended as qualified for a card) or you may have pre-qualified (this is when you fill out a pre-qualification form like this one which you can access from the home page of the Credit One Bank website).

One important consideration with the first case, where you are contacted by the bank for a pre-approval, is that they are not a guarantee of approval. For example, the bank in question might not have your income during the pre-qualification or pre-approval, which could be the deciding factor as to whether or not your application is approved. Or, your overall credit utilization across other cards could have increased since the time you were added to the pre-approval mailing list by the bank.

The good thing about receiving a pre-approval or completing a pre-qualification before an actual application is that although the bank will be able to access the same information as they could with a hard pull to provide you with these offers, the bank will only perform a soft pull to do so, meaning there will be no mark on your credit report and no negative effect on your credit.

You can expect to receive your Credit One card in the mail within 10 days. You will need to activate your card within 14 days or it will be automatically closed. This is a significantly shorter time period than that of many of the global banks, like American Express, Capital One, or Chase. Credit One is understandably but noticeably harsher than other banks as they are a sub-prime lender (sub-prime is a less than 650 or so credit score), and you will find high fees on their cards and in many cases will be charged interest beginning at the time you make a purchase. However, if you pay in full consistently, you can get your credit limit increased. With this in mind, only consider Credit One if you are rebuilding credit and do not want a secured card.

In the same way that individuals with excellent credit will be sometimes denied by prime banks for too many recent inquiries, due to the expectation that these customers may be only trying to obtain sign up bonuses and are unlikely to be consistent users of the card they are applying for, Credit One will also deny you for too many recent inquiries, under the expectation that you may badly need credit and may not be able to pay them back.

As a friendly reminder, Credit One is a separate bank from Capital One.

Calling The Credit One Credit Card Reconsideration Phone Number

There is not a dedicated reconsideration phone number for Credit One, but if you are denied, there are a few phone numbers that may help you:

Customer Service: 1-877-825-3242
Application Information: 1-800-752-5493
Collections: 1-888-729-6274

You can also mail a letter to the mailing address you receive on the denial letter from Credit One:

Credit One Bank
P.O. Box 98878
Las Vegas, NV 89193-8878
1-877-825-3242

How To Check Your Discover Credit Card Application Status

You can check by phone or online to receive your application decision.
1. You can apply online here. You will need to enter your social security number and zip code.
Discover Application Status
2. You can call Discover customer service at 1-800 Discover (1-800-347-2683). You can also call the members number at 1-800-347-3085 to check your application status. It takes time to process an application that is under review, so it’s recommended to wait 2 days after applying before calling to check.

There are several reasons your application may have been flagged as requiring further review. For example, Discover states that your approval time may be longer if identity verification is required, or if you have a lot of credit lines open. You may be called to request more information.

If you are approved, you will normally receive the card in the mail in 7-10 business days. If it’s a card with quarterly bonuses, you’ll want to activate the current bonuses from the cash back calendar here. As long as you pay your balance consistently, you can expect your credit limit to significantly increase.

Calling The Discover Credit Card Reconsideration Phone Number

The phone number for reconsideration is 1-800-347-2683 or 1-800-347-4736 for New Accounts. If the reasons for denial are not legitimate, you may get approved. This would be after a second pull on your credit, so make sure you are not applying for a mortgage soon, which is a situation when you want to limit your hard inquiries. Alternatively, you may be informed that reconsideration is not an option and recommended to reapply or to apply for a secured card.

You can write to Discover at this address:

Discover Financial Services
P.O. Box 30943
Salt Lake City, UT 84130-0943

It’s possible Discover made the denial decision with information that is not up-to-date, so if something in your credit file recently changed in the last 60 days, this would be a good reason to call reconsideration. For example, if you were able to clean up a derogatory mark, such as a tax lien or something as simple as a late payment, or if you were to significantly lower your credit utilization, this could help your case for reconsideration. Discover is known as a difficult bank to get approved with, and reconsideration attempts are no exception.

How To Check Store Cards’ Credit Card Application Status [+ Reconsideration Phone Numbers]

JCPenney

There is no way to check your application status online, but you can call 800-542-0800.

After you apply, you could receive an under review response and a request to wait 7-10 days for a decision.

If you are denied, note there is not a formal phone number for reconsideration, but you could send mail to this address, or simply send mail to ask about your application status, if it has been under review for more than 10 days:

JCPenney Credit Services
customer service C/O SYNCB
P.O. Box 965009
Orlando, FL 32896-5009

Another option is to call the main Synchrony bank phone number at 866-419-4096 if you have other Synchrony accounts. In general, you may have a better chance of approval if you are an existing customer of the bank through another store card.

Store cards tend to be easier to be approved for, but there is no guarantee of approval, especially online. Applying in store may be a less rigorous approval process. For example, normally you are applying during a purchase, which could help.

Also, applying in store during the holidays could increase your odds. Cashiers may especially want to work with you during this time of year, not only to help you achieve your shopping goals but also to assist you quickly in order to get to the next customer. It may be possible to receive a more generous credit limit in store as well.

If you are approved and make several payments on time, it’s worth requesting a higher credit limit, which you can do in your online account, especially if you receive less than $500 as your credit limit. That limit can rise. Cardholders with older accounts may have a credit limit of $10,000 while cardholders just starting out may have about $100 as their limit.

Note that typical reasons for denials from global banks apply to store cards like JCPenney’s as well, such as derogatory marks like collections and late payments, or too many recent inquiries.

Lowes

You can call the Lowe’s Credit Center at 1-800-444-0430 or 1-800-444-1408 and follow the prompts for application status. You can also contact Customer Care at 1-800-445-6937 and follow the prompts for the credit card option.

If you are asked to wait 4-5 days or 7-10 days for your application status, it may not be a denial. For example, a common issue is identity verification. You may be asked to confirm a code sent to your phone. To try to move your application forward and if you have tried the numbers above, you can call Credit Services at 1-800-380-0186 or Consumer Underwriting at 866-740-7929.

If you are approved, you may request a higher credit limit by calling Synchrony Bank Credit Solutions at 877-379-8173 or 1-866-519-6441. This is an opportunity to request a high limit that you might not have otherwise been automatically granted when you applied, without another hard pull on your credit. This is currently not an automated line and you will likely be connected to a representative directly, but this may change.

One additional opportunity for you, if you are planning to make a big purchase from Lowe’s but don’t think you’ll get approved based on your credit profile, is to get an estimate for the purchase in store. Because of the way the application system works, you may be given a pre-approval option as a result to help you fund your purchase. This is not guaranteed, but it’s relevant to mention that at the very least applying in store will be relatively straightforward and allow you to receive your credit limit immediately.

Macy’s

If your application needs further processing or 7-10 days for review, call the Credit Center at 800-627-2909. It may be as simple as the information submitted in your application being incorrect. It’s true that it could be a pending denial for any common reason like too many accounts, too little credit history, or derogatory remarks: for example, a medical debt in collections.

If you were denied and expect to be approved under reconsideration of new information or otherwise believe your decision to be in error, call Credit Services at 800-477-2167.

If you need an instant decision, you can apply in store. This is generally recommended for Macy’s.

Note that if you’re considering applying after a bankruptcy discharge, it’s generally a good move to get a secured card, which will let you upgrade to an unsecured card in a year or so. However, in the case of store cards like the Macy’s credit card, you only have the option of unsecured (with the exception of Amazon’s Credit Builder cards). Because of this, for Macy’s and other Synchrony Bank cards, it’s recommended to wait 4 years after a bankruptcy to apply for an unsecured card through them. Especially if you had included a Synchrony Bank card in your bankruptcy file, you may be classified as a risk and denied.

Note that having a store card in the mix of cards that makes up your credit profile won’t boost your credit score, so if you already have other cards rebuilding your credit, you probably don’t need to get a store card after bankruptcy if credit building is your primary goal.

Sears

Sears cards are issued by Citi. To see the information for application status and reconsideration, go here.

You may receive a message stating you will be approved within 30 days.

Target

The Target REDcard is issued through T.D. Bank. You can call 1-800-424-6888 to check your application status.

Although it is not officially designated for checking application status, you can send mail to:

Target Card Services
ATTN: Credit Department
P.O. Box 5329
Sioux Falls, SD 57117-5329

You may receive a response that it will take 7-10 days to review your application from TD Bank. In some cases, this will just require verifying your social security number and address. In many cases, this is a denial.

Your credit report, including any delinquencies, such as student loans or auto loans, is the main factor driving your decision, provided you have enough income. However, if you have a credit score below 600, it’s probable that your file was denied for this reason. That said, if you are able to raise your score and get the card – and although this isn’t explicitly stated by Target – making purchases at Target is important if you want to keep the credit limit you are provided. They may even raise it if you are a frequent customer.

If you are denied and don’t expect to have a change in your credit score or report in the next few months that will allow you to be reconsidered or have a reapplication approved, you may want to consider Target Debit Card. You don’t get the benefits of building credit, but you get the same 5% off at Target and Target.com.

Walmart

You can check your credit card application status by calling 1-877-969-3668 to reach Capital One’s Walmart credit card line.

Capital One does not have a dedicated reconsideration phone number, but you can view other phone numbers that may allow you to discuss reasons your denial may have been in error here.

Upon applying, if you are told your application is under review and it will be 7-10 days until a decision is reached, you may have to verify your identity, such as your phone number. You would have received a reference number emailed to you, which you can use during your reconsideration call if you choose to ask for reconsideration.

Typical reasons for denial are no different for the Walmart cards. Too many recent inquiries may result in a denial, and this includes inquiries that were conducted for a single purpose, as they will show up on your credit report separately. Credit utilization, also referred to as your balance-to-limit ratio will also be a factor, as well as the number of bills you are paying as agreed: in other words, late payments. Judgements from court cases and foreclosures will also be a factor.

How To Check Your US Bank Credit Card Application Status

You can check your U.S. Bank application status online and by phone.

1. You can check your application status online here. You will need to provide your last name, email address, date of birth, and social security number.
US Bank Application Status

2. You can call 800-947-1444 to learn your status over the phone. This is an up-to-date source and will update accordingly.

After applying, there is a significant chance you will get a message saying your application will be under review for 7-10 days, even if you had received a pre-qualified or pre-approved letter for being an existing customer. An existing relationship can help, but either way it’s normal for there to be a delay with US Bank. You may be informed that you have been approved after 2-3 business days, as applications are typically manually reviewed.

If you are denied, you may be offered a different US Bank credit card with a lower limit. This is in contrast to other banks, which typically do not make a recommendation like this and leave it up to you to find a card that fits you and reapply.

Calling The US Bank Credit Card Reconsideration Phone Number

For reconsideration, you can call the US Bank Underwriting Department at (800) 947-1444. It will still take 2-3 days for your application to be reviewed in more detail.

You may be denied for traditional reasons, such as being unable to verify your identity. For example, your home address may be slightly different than the address they have in their system, or the internet address that your computer sent the application in from may have shown up as a different location than your home address. Or, you may have a thin credit history, also known as a tradeline history, meaning your average age of accounts on your credit report is low. A bankruptcy could also result in a denial, although if it is more than 7 or so years old, manual review will not consider it and you will have a greater chance of approval.

How To Check Your Wells Fargo Credit Card Application Status

You can check your Wells Fargo application online here. You will choose the access code from email option if you don’t have an existing account and enter your access code, last name, date of birth, and Last 4 digits of your social security number.
Wells Fargo Application Status
2. You can also call 800-967-9521.

Wells Fargo considers your relationship with the bank in its application process, and you may even hear this stated as reason for a denial. If you have a bank account with them, it will increase your odds of approval. If you don’t, applying in branch can be a good alternative option to increase your odds.

They also consider the number of lines of credit you have open (several is good, a dozen is not as good), as well as your debt to income ratio and age of accounts – possibly the most important factor of all. An additional consideration to be aware of is multiple inquiries that you might have initiated when shopping for a mortgage, loan, or other credit credit. These may factor as one inquiry for your credit score, but the fact that they show up separately on your credit report will be noted by Wells Fargo and factor into your decision.

As is the case for other banks too, having store cards on your account when you already have other cards open as well does not necessarily help your application and may detract from it.

Calling The Wells Fargo Credit Card Reconsideration Phone Number

There is not an officially stated reconsideration phone number for Wells Fargo. However, you can call Credit Card Accounts at 1-800-642-4720 or the Executive Office at 866-677-1128 if you think there has been a mistake.

You can mail the credit card department here:

Consumer Credit Card Services
Wells Fargo Card Services
P.O. Box 51193
Los Angeles, CA 90051-5493

In some cases, you may be denied and asked to verify your information, at which point you will be approved. In other cases, an exception can be made and you can be approved if you have an otherwise excellent profile but were declined by the automatic rules they have in place.

Pro Tip: When you’re calling reconsideration, it is typically easier to get a credit line increase on an existing card than to get approved for a card you were initially denied for, but it never hurts to call in either case.

How To Complete The American Eagle Credit Card Application

American Eagle offers two credit cards: AEO Credit Card and AEO Visa? Credit Card. When you apply here on Synchrony Bank?s website (Synchrony Bank issues the cards), you are considered for both cards and depending on your creditworthiness may be assigned the Visa, which is valid everywhere, or the store card, which is only valid at American Eagle stores.

You will have to be at least 15 years old to apply and a resident of the US or Canada, and there is no pre-approval process. This will require a hard pull on your credit.

If you call to check your application status, you might hear that the approval process could take 7-10 business days for you. This does not mean you are denied. There are multiple reasons it can take longer for some applications to get approved, while others are approved on the same day. For example, it might take time to verify your identity, particularly if you have limited credit history. If after 7-10 days, you receive a decision and you are ultimately denied, look at the reason you were denied, which the issuer is required to disclose. If it?s a delinquency that you think you is inaccurate, you might be able to get it removed from your credit report. If it?s income, you might provide an income update if you now make more than when you originally reported your income on the application.

Is the American Eagle Credit Card Easy To Get?

Getting approved for AEO Credit Card is possible even with bad credit, but it?s recommended you have a fair score of 580-669. For people with a good score of 670 – 750 and solid income, the approval rate will be pretty high for AEO Visa? Credit Card. Overall, the requirements are not very strict to get approved, and it?s easy to maintain the cards because neither has an annual fee.

How do I increase my credit limit for the American Eagle Credit Card?

If you are approved, you might not be happy with your credit limit. For example, you could be approved with a $100 credit limit, which is not that unusual for a store card. If you only shop at American Eagle a few times a year, this could be a problem, because having to split a $100+ purchase across multiple cards can be frustrating. Also, if you spend up to your credit limit, you can hurt your credit score, because credit utilization factors heavily into your credit score (it?s about a quarter of the score). You want to be aware of how your credit limit changes over time, because unfortunately, it?s commonplace to hear of people who had their credit limits lowered on their Synchrony Bank cards.

If you want to get a higher credit limit and have a higher income or increased your credit score since you first applied, you might want to upgrade to the VISA. The easiest way to do this is to reapply. It will be a new account, so your credit score will go down a few points or more from the hard inquiry, but even if you were issued an upgrade directly from the store card you would still have a new account and a hard inquiry.

That said, you may not get approved. If you want to potentially increase your chances of being approved for the Visa, you can call Synchrony Bank Credit Solutions at 877-379-8173, to request a higher credit limit on the store card you currently have. It can?t hurt to apply with a higher existing credit limit, and the Visa will almost definitely provide you an even higher credit limit than your existing limit, as well as the ability to earn rewards on all purchases, anywhere, a benefit which all AEO Visa cardholders enjoy.

How do I pay my bill for the American Eagle Credit Card?

Once approved and content with your credit limit, you can manage your existing account, check your balance, and make a payment at the American Eagle credit card website operated by Synchrony Bank, here. You can pay using your checking account or debit card. If you forget your username, there is a Find User ID option on that page that just requires your credit card number and zip code to verify your identity. Then, if you need to, you will also be able to reset your password. You can pay by phone at 866-419-4096, but there is a fee for doing so. You can also mail in your payment using the address below for your card. Synchrony Bank just asks that you please make sure to include your account number on your check or money order so they know to apply it to your account.

AE Credit Card
PO Box 530942
Atlanta, GA 30353-0942

AE Visa Credit Card
PO Box 960013
Orlando, FL 32896-0013

There is also an address to send overnight payments to Synchrony Bank for either American Eagle credit card:

Synchrony Bank
140 Wekiva Springs Road
Longwood, FL 32779

One important note in the terms and conditions is that any payments not made online, such as payments mailed or made by phone, may be credited to your account five days after receipt. So although there is an address for overnight payments, don?t count on it being applied before 5pm ET on your due date, which is the deadline.

If you run into any issues or would like to help with a feature: say for example, you want to add an authorized user to your card, you can call Synchrony Bank customer service at 877-295-2080.

How do I set up autopay for the American Eagle Credit Card?

One important feature you want to set up when you?re in the Synchrony Bank portal, if you can afford it, is autopay. Synchrony Bank provides the following instructions:

1. From the Home Page, select the, Autopay-Off link located below the Make Payment button.

2. Click the Enroll in Autopay button.
3. Select the payment amount and payment source.
4. Agree to the Terms and Confirm Autopay.
5. Review your Autopay settings and Submit. You will see a confirmation screen showing your Autopay settings and a confirmation number. Synchrony Bank will also send you a confirmation email to the email address on file for your account.

It?s important to pay the correct amount each month, Synchrony Bank will not schedule and autopay that amount for you. It?s your responsibility to pick the amount.

How do I activate the American Eagle Credit Card?

Once you?re logged into the Synchrony Bank portal, you?ll also be able to activate your card in the portal.

The first thing you?ll want to pay attention to before using your card is the 20% off coupon on your first purchase that comes with being granted your card. If you were thinking of making a big purchase at American Eagle, this is the right time to do it. The fine print says you have to purchase AEO and Aerie branded merchandise. You also can?t combine the 20% coupon with any other discount.

Should I apply for the American Eagle credit card?

American Eagle Outfitters Connected Rewards Program Page

The important thing to know about AEO Connected is that it?s a loyalty program separate from the AEO Connected credit cards. You get benefits just for signing up to the loyalty program, which is free to sign up. The credit cards are also free to apply for, and have no annual fee.

Pro Tip: When you apply for an AEO Connected credit card, make sure that you provide a valid email, so that you will also be signed up for the loyalty program.

You?ll have to decide if the benefits given by the credit cards are worth the time spent filling out the application, especially if you are already in the loyalty program or have another card you get great rewards from. This is an important question, and in our opinion, unless you value American Eagle points very highly, we would recommend you use another card that earns flexible points that can be redeemed for cash back or travel rewards, or rewards that can be earned at more than one store. Unless you really value the side benefits, such as cardholder events and personal shopping days, the American Eagle credit card is not a good choice. Then again, if you?re not going to use a rewards card otherwise, it?s better than nothing. At the very least, make sure you sign up to the AEO Connected Loyalty Program, which grants you almost as high a rewards rate as the AEO Connected credit cards.

The complete perks offered by the AEO Connected credit cards are as follows:

Card Benefits:

*Extra Access Benefits are available when you spend $350 or more in a calendar year at American Eagle. After a 2 week processing period, you receive $15 off for every 2,500 points earned (rather than the normal $10 off), and you become eligible for free shipping. You also get a 20% birthday discount.

As shown above, the only difference between the two AEO Connected credit cards is that the Visa can be used anywhere and earns 5 points for every $1 spent everywhere, while the store card can only be used and can only earn rewards at American Eagle stores.

There are a few perks that stand out for the AEO credit cards.

First, the buy 5 get 1 free benefit for jeans and bras can be valuable, but keep in mind this excludes clearance and third-party items (we think third-party items means non-American Eagle and Aerie items). Also the details reasonably state that jeans not include denim items like skirts, shorts, and shirts.

Second, the free shipping benefit provided by both American Eagle cards is very valuable if you spend a lot at American Eagle online, at ae.com. The free shipping is standard shipping, which will take about 3 – 10 business days. Note you also get free standard shipping automatically on the website if your order is more than $50.

What is the APR for the American Eagle Credit Card?

The main thing you?ll want to pay attention to with these cards is the high APR: 27.49%. This is normal for a store card to have a high annual interest rate, but it?s something to watch nonetheless. The other billing details are also normal. The late payment is normal, stated as up to $39, and the grace period of 23 days is average, just above the minimum of 21 days. This means your payment due date is 23 days after the close of the billing period. Your billing cycle length and due date are on your credit card statement.

Because the APR is high, it?s important to not fall behind on payments. Synchrony Bank has been around since 1932 and is the largest provider of private label credit cards in the US, so it is a company you can trust is providing value to its customers. However, there are still reports on its BBB profile that its customer service phone system and online portal is not intuitive, even causing some accounts to go to collection due to errors with billing. With this in mind, your American Eagle Synchrony account is an especially important account to keep on top of.

The AEO Connected Visa also carries a 3% foreign transaction fee. If you?re traveling internationally, this is not the card you want to use. You also want a different card for balance transfers, as there is no balance transfer period. The cash advance fee (cash advances are only allowed on the Visa) is 5%, with a minimum of $10, so if you?re trying to get cash out of AEO Visa credit card, be aware that this is a high cash advance fee. As you can see, there are few advantages that AEO Visa has, and you?re almost just as well off with the store card. However, there are a couple key differences. First, you are likely to have a higher credit limit with the Visa, and second, you have the ability to earn points outside of American Eagle that you can redeem at American Eagle with the Visa. However, the value of the points you can earn with these cards is not very high.

How do American Eagle Credit Card Points Work?

For every 2,500 points you earn, a $10 Reward is issued. This means each point is worth $0.004. Although it looks like cashback, It?s not really cashback, because you can only redeem it at American Eagle.

There are a few options for redemption. You can redeem in store, online, by phone, and through the AEO | Aerie mobile app.

If you earn Extra Access Benefits by spending $350 or more at American Eagle, you get  $15 off for every 2,500 points. In this case, each point is worth $0.006. These are normal point values for store cards, but if you had a normal credit card, like Chase Freedom, Citi Double Cash, or Discover It Cash Back, for example, you would be earning at least double these point values for every dollar you spent in almost all cases. Plus, you would earn this rewards rate at every store and on every purchase, not just on purchases at American Eagle stores. This is something to consider when looking at any store card.

Another thing to consider is that if you just sign up for the AEO Connected loyalty program, you get 10 points for every $1. This is a free loyalty program and you can sign up without the card. To redeem rewards, you just pull up your rewards coupon on your phone at checkout in the store, or if you?re shopping online and signed in, your rewards can be applied before you checkout. AEO Connected is a convenient way to earn points toward future purchases with very little effort required in redeeming the points.

With AEO Connected, whether you have one of the cards or not, you typically receive points within 2 – 3 weeks. However, it may take up to 90 days to receive them. To prevent points expiring, you need to make sure you make a purchase every 375 days. Keeping your points from expiring will also keep any jeans and bra credits active that you have earned towards a free bra or free pair of jeans. Any free bra or free jeans certificates you have already received will expire on the date stated on the certificate, which is at least 45 days after the certificate is issued to you. Because it will take about 2-3 weeks to receive your reward certificate after buying the needed 5 bras or jeans, at the very least you?ll have a month to cash in the reward certificate to get your free bra or pair of jeans.

Resources for AEO Credit Card Holders:

How do I change my address?

To change your address for your card, you can check the box on your statement and print your new address in the space provided. Or, you can call the number on the back of your card or on your statement. That number is 877-295-2080.

How do I cancel my card?

To cancel your card, you can call the number on the back of your card. Or, you can call 877-295-2080 to reach Synchrony Bank or send a letter to the address on your billing statement. Calling is the easiest way to cancel the card. If you?d like to get rid of your AEO Connected membership entirely, you can email CustomerCare@ae.com or call 1-888-232-4535. When you cancel your AEO Connected membership, you lose points or credits you have earned. However, when you just cancel the card, you still retain an active AEO membership.

Why was my card closed?

If your card was closed by Synchrony Bank and you want to get it back, you can call 877-295-2080. To get a better understanding of why your card was closed, you should check to see if any new items were added to your credit report and be aware of recent purchases you may have made that decreased your credit utilization.

What do I do if my card was lost or stolen?

If you lose your card or if your card is stolen, you should report this by calling Synchrony Bank at 1 800-843-0875. The card has $0 fraud liability like nearly every credit card, so you won?t be responsible for charges, unless they are from someone you gave account access to.

What is the customer service number for my card?

The American Eagle credit card department customer service number is 1-800-843-0875. The customer service hours for Synchrony Bank are Mon – Fri: 8:00 AM – 12:00 AM ET and the number is 1-866-419-4096, but you also have the option of using the chat to speak with a virtual representative, and the chat is surprisingly fast and helpful.

Is the American Eagle credit card worth it?

For most people, just signing up for AEO Connected Rewards, which is free and doesn’t check your credit, is worth it and a good use of time, and there is no need to take extra time and effort to get an AEO credit card. This is because the credit cards only earn 15 points per $1 spent at American Eagle, while the loyalty program earns 10 points per $1. Yes, you earn 50% more points with the cards, but with the points being worth less than one cent and redeemable only at American Eagle stores, almost any major credit card will get you better rewards than the American Eagle credit cards.

Even if you spend a lot at American Eagle on ae.com, there are not that many pros to holding the credit cards, because as soon as you spend $350 per calendar year at American Eagle stores, you get free standard shipping with the AEO Connected rewards program even if you don?t have an AEO credit card. That said, if you spend less than $350 annually, you will need one of the cards to get free shipping, so if it?s worth it to save $10-$30 on shipping, depending on how much you spend at ae.com each year, you might want to apply for the card.

The Bottom Line: How Good is the American Eagle Credit Card?

The bottom line is that most people would be better off with a cash back card, like Citi Double Cash, which earns 2% cash back, 1% when you make a purchase and 1% when you pay your bill. In contrast, the AEO Connected cards earn 0.6% back and it must be spent at American Eagle stores. Plus, if you are willing to venture outside of American Eagle stores, and shop at other department stores or shop online at a department store?s online store like Target.com, you could earn 5% cash back with Chase Freedom or Discover It Cash Back when these categories are active, which they typically are every year. There is a $1,500 spending limit per quarter for these high cash back cards, but regardless, 5% cash back is almost ten times higher a cash back rate than the 0.6% provided by the AEO cards.

Like most store credit card interest rates, the AEO Connnected credit cards? interest rate is high, and even the more flexible of the two AEO cards, the Visa card, is not that useful outside of American Eagle stores, because the rewards rate is so low. We are also yet to see reports of people using the American Eagle cards with mobile wallet, such as Apple Pay, either, which is a feature that is becoming increasingly standard for credit cards.

With all that said, if earning and redeeming American Eagle rewards by using a dedicated American Eagle credit card is important to you, the AEO Connected cards are the right choice for you. There are in fact side benefits like cardholder events and the personal shopping day coupon that could be important to longtime American Eagle fans. However, for everyone else, stick with a card that gets rewards you can redeem everywhere, not just at American Eagle.

Is Citi Costco Anywhere Credit Card worth it?

Citi Costco Anywhere Visa is a great card for Costco shoppers who spend a lot on restaurants, travel, and especially gas. The annual fee starts at $60 for a Costco membership.

The rewards rate high. The unlimited 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases is especially attractive, but the challenge is that the cash is returned to you once a year and is only redeemable at Costco. In other words, it’s not really cash back, but a Costco certificate.

Pros

  • 4% cash back on eligible gas for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter – that’s $280 if you spend $7,000
  • 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases
  • 2% cash back on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com – great for frequent Costco shoppers

Cons

  • Must be Costco member
  • No travel perks, just cash back on eligible travel purchases – airfare, hotels, car rentals, travel agencies, cruise lines and Costco Travel
  • Cash back is provided as an annual credit card reward certificate once your February billing statement closes, and is redeemable for cash or merchandise at U.S. Costco Warehouses

Is Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard worth it?

Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard is a solid card for people who shop at Kroger frequently. The bulk of Kroger stores are located mainly in the midwest and south.

Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard earns 3 points per dollar on Kroger’s own products including Heritage Farm, “p$$t check this out”, Luvsome, Bakery Fresh Goodness, Fresh Foods Market, Fresh Selections by Kroger, Home Sense, Comforts for Baby, Simple Truth Organic, Simple Truth, Abound, Private Selection, HemisFares, Big K, Pet Pride, and Kroger. If you don’t regularly buy at least a few of those brands, this card may be less valuable for you.

Cardholders also get 2 points per dollar at the Kroger Family of Companies (excluding fuel centers), which includes Kroger Marketplace, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, King Soopers, Dillons, Smith’s Food & Drug Stores, Smith?s Marketplace, Fry’s Food and Drug Store, Fry’s Marketplace, QFC – Quality Food Centers, City Market, Baker’s, Owen’s, JayC Food Stores, Gerbes, Pay Less Super Markets, Food4Less (So CA, NV, IN and IL stores only), Foods Co, Fred Meyer Jewelers, Littman Jewelers, Barclay Jewelers, and Kroger.

Cardholders also get an additional 25 cents off per gallon for one year each time you redeem at least 100 fuel points at participating Kroger Family of Companies Fuel Centers. To earn fuel points, you buy groceries with your Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard and earn 1 point per dollar. If you bought $100 of groceries, you would earn the 25 cent discount for one year. Note fuel points do not count towards rewards points, and you would not receive another 25 cents off that already discounted price for redeeming more fuel points.

The Kroger points rewards are issued as Rewards Certificates that can be redeemed at the Kroger Family of Companies, not including Kroger fuel centers. The points are worth one half cent per dollar. Note that the average credit card point is worth one cent per dollar. Rewards Certificates can not be used to purchase alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco or prescription products.

The rewards rate is only 3 points per $1 x one half cent per point = 1.5%, and strictly from a financial perspective you would be better off with a flat-rate cash back card that gives you unlimited cash back on all purchases.

For example, Citi Double Cash gives you 2% cash back on anything, not just Kroger products: 1% when you buy, plus 1% as you pay the balance. If you don’t spend that much at Kroger, you can do even better on groceries and gas specifically with Bank of America Cash Rewards, which gets you 3% cash back on gas and 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs up to $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter, followed by 1% cash back on everything else.

If the 25 cent gas benefit is important to you, and if you shop at Kroger or its other companies often and want a store-specific Kroger card, Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS World Mastercard is a solid card for you.

Pros

  • 3 points per eligible net $1 on the Kroger Family of Companies Own Brand Products
  • An additional 25 off per gallon for one year each time you redeem at least 100 fuel points at participating Kroger Family of Companies Fuel Centers

Cons

  • Points are worth one half cent

Is Target REDcard MasterCard worth it?

Target REDcard MasterCard is a great card for Target shoppers. The 10% off anniversary offer is an exclusive offer that will be sent to the primary cardholder via email after the RedCard opening anniversary date. The 5% discount applies to almost every Target purchase possible, with the exception of some in-store restaurants, prescriptions, and Target Optical eye exams. With no annual fee, it’s powerful to carry an unlimited 5% off coupon in your pocket for anything at Target. The APR is normal for store cards, higher than most other cards: currently 24.65%. The main benefits offered are the additional 30 days for returns and exchanges and free 2-day shipping on hundreds of thousands of items from Target.com. If you’re deciding between the prepaid REDcard and the REDCard Mastercard, note that you will be upgraded to the Mastercard from the prepaid. Is Starbucks Rewards Visa worth it?

Starbucks Rewards Visa is a solid card for Starbucks fans. You will earn stars and 50 stars can be redeemed for a Brewed hot coffee, bakery item or hot tea and 150 can be redeemed for a custom drink, hot breakfast or parfait.

You earn 6,500 Bonus Stars after you spend $500 using your Starbucks Rewards Visa Credit Card anywhere in the first 3 months. That’s 6500 / 150 = more than 43 custom drinks. If you value a drink at $5, that’s more than $200 of value, and a single star is worth $5 / 150 = more than three cents. That’s great the first year, but there?s a $49 annual fee.

If you really like Starbucks, this is a great card for you, you just have to buy 100 drinks for it to make financial sense. For example, let’s assume you earn the full 3 stars per $1 when you go to Starbucks and use this card. That’s 1 Star per $1 when digitally loading your Starbucks Card with your Starbucks Rewards Visa Card plus 2 Stars per $1 spent when that Starbucks Card is used to pay at Starbucks.

To get $50 of value or more to cover the annual fee you would have to earn $50 / $5 = 10 free drinks x 150 stars = 1500 stars. You could earn 1500 stars by spending 1500 stars / 3 stars per $1 = $500 annually on $500 / $5 = 100 custom drinks.

Of course, it?s not always about the payoff, sometimes there are side perks, like getting Barista Picks recommended for you by being a cardholder. In either case, this is a great card for people who go to Starbucks a few times a week or enjoy getting recommendations from Baristas.

Pros

  • Stars earned do not expire as long as your Starbucks Rewards Visa Credit Card account is open
  • 8 Barista Picks throughout the year – food and drinks we love, curated just for you

Cons

  • $49 annual fee
  • Grocery stores, local transit and commuting, and internet, cable, and phone services rewards rate of 1 Star per $2 is not great, even if stars are worth 3 cents, that’s 1.5% back and it?s not cash, it’s Starbucks stars

  • Grow your REI Annual Dividend: The 5%, 2% and 1% earned with your card is on top of your typical 10% member dividend
  • When you make a purchase with your REI Co-op World Elite Mastercard, we donate to projects that restore trails, habitat and more in the places we all love to explore
  • Use your Annual Dividend for REI adventure travel and we?ll reduce the trip cost by 50% of the dividend amount you use

Is REI Mastercard worth it?

REI Mastercard is a solid card for REI members. A lifetime membership costs $20 and entitles you to a share of REI’s annual profits, in the form of a member dividend that is sized according to your expenditure at REI that year.

You can earn a dividend on most full-price items and other eligible REI merchandise purchases posted from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. Purchases made with gift cards, discounted purchases, REI Adventures trips and certain other REI purchases don’t qualify.

However, it you use your annual dividend for REI adventure travel, REI will reduce your trip cost by 50% of the dividend amount you redeem for the trip. In other words, if the trip is $500, and you redeem $100 from your dividend, the trip would be $450. To qualify for the benefit, the trip payment must be made by calling at 800-622-2236 using your REI Co-op World Elite Mastercard. The main reason REI members might want to get this card is unselfish, because REI donates $0.10 per REI Co-op World Elite Mastercard purchase transaction made to the National Forest Foundation, up to $1 million. Even if that benefit is not interesting to you though, 5% back on purchases at REI might be. It’s also great that you can use REI Mastercard anywhere and get 2% back on mobile wallet purchases. Unfortunately, the rewards are distributed with your member dividend annually, so you can’t use them part way through the year. REI Mastercard is a great card for REI members, and for people making purchases at REI who aren’t members it might make more financial sense to pay $20 to become a member so you can get the dividend and this card.

Pros

  • Cell Phone Coverage is for damage or theft up to $800, with a $50 deductible, up to $1,000 per 12-month period. Unfortunately, the policy provides secondary coverage only, but the protection applies to up to three cellphones, the primary line and up to the first two secondary lines on the covered phone bill
  • This year, REI will donate $0.10 per REI Co-op World Elite Mastercard purchase transaction made to the National Forest Foundation, up to $1 million
  • no foreign transaction fee
  • No annual fee5X Rewards for every $1 spent on all eligible RCI purchases
  • 2X Rewards for every $1 spent on all eligible travel purchases
  • Travel purchases and redemptions are reasonably defined as Airlines, Hotels, Motels, Campgrounds, Car Rental Agencies, Cruise Lines, Travel Agencies, Discount Travel Sites, Trains, Buses, Taxis, Limousines, and Ferries
  • You get a $250 Vacation Credit towards one RCI vacation when you spend $10,000 in net purchases each calendar year. You cannot combine vacation credits, but cardholders have a full 13 months from the date they receive their $250 vacation credit to use it.
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • No annual fee

Cons

  • The rewards can’t be used part way through the year. The 5%, 2% and 1% rewards are distributed with your member dividend annually and can be used for REI purchases as soon as you receive it. Alternatively, from July 1 through Jan 3 of the following year you can ask in-store to get your dividend in cash, or you can request a check on REI’s website, by calling, or through the mail.

Is RCI Elite Rewards MasterCard worth it?

RCI Elite Rewards MasterCard is a solid card for RCI members and people who utilite RCI services. Membership is limited to people owning a timeshare at an RCI affiliated resort. RCI calls themselves the largest timeshare vacation exchange network in the world, and there are nearly 4 million members.

Although RCI sounds exclusive to members only, there is a program called RCI Platinum ? an $89 membership that provides discounts on select vacations booked through your account, including 25% off Guest Certificates you can share with family and friends. They are basically providing you the opportunity to purchase discounted gift cards redeemable for RCI purchases.

The rewards rate for RCI purchases is great: RCI Elite Rewards MasterCard cardholders earn 5X Rewards for every $1 spent on all eligible RCI purchases and 2X Rewards for every $1 spent on all eligible travel purchases. It’s a good rewards rate, because the points are worth about one cent. Other RCI currency, like RCI points, can sometimes be worth less; for example, a one-day car rental with Avis to and from JFK in New York cost $70 or about 8,000 RCI points. That’s less than one cent per point.

All in all, RCI Elite Rewards MasterCard is a solid card for RCI timeshare owners already spending money with RCI, who would like to travel more with RCI, but at a discount by redeeming their Rewards.

Pros

  • 5X Rewards for every $1 spent on all eligible RCI purchases

Cons

  • Make sure you’re ready to go when you book with your vacation credit – no refunds will be granted 30 days or fewer from the check-in date
  • No cash back with this card

Is NHL Discover it worth it?

NHL Discover it is a great card for NHL fans who like rotating cash back. The 5% cash back categories change each quarter and may include one or more of the following: gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, Amazon.com and more. Unfortunately, the 5% cash back stops at a maximum of $1,500 each quarter. Cardholders who spend more than $500/month will want to make sure they have another card to get rewards on everyday expenses once they hit the maximum.

The cashback match is a great feature: Discover will automatically match all the cash back you?ve earned at the end of your first year. This card is basically the same as the Discover it? Cash Back, and like that card it is highly recommended.

Is MLB Mastercard worth it?

MLB Mastercard is a great card for MLB fans. You can choose the card with your favorite team and all MLB teams are available. Cardholders get a $200 cash rewards bonus after making at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days.

The rewards rate is average: unfortunately the 3% and 2% rewards are only valid on up to $2,500 in combined purchases per quarter, so this is not a great everyday spend card if you spend more than $10,000 each year. However, as with other eligible Bank of America rewards cards, if you have a balance of more than $20,000 combined between any Bank of America and Merrill investment accounts, you earn a Rewards Bonus of 25% or more with the MLB Mastercard. Bank of America calls this Preferred Rewards, and it helps boost the value of the card.

Pros

  • $200 cash rewards bonus after making at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days
  • Cash rewards can be redeemed anytime for statement credit
  • You can choose the card with your favorite team and all MLB teams are available

The front of the card can be customized with Spider-Man, Iron Man, Black Panther, the Avengers, a wallpaper of Marvel superhero emblems, or Captain America?s shield. The card has no annual fee.
