Is JetBlue Business Card worth it?

JetBlue Business Card is a great card for JetBlue business travelers. Cardholders earn 50,000 points after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days and earn 10,000 additional points when a purchase is made on an employee card in the first 90 days.

To find out how much 60,000 points is worth, we looked at the price of a roundtrip flight from ORD Chicago O?Hare to MCO Orlando International Airport departing on Christmas and returning on New Year?s Day booked two months in advance. The cost would be 106,200 points or $1108, valuing the points on one cent apiece and making the 60,000 signup bonus worth $600 in JetBlue travel.

Now to find out if the card is worth renewing for $99, let’s assume you travel six times a year on flights having the same value as the example, $1108 and you don’t use this card for any other purchases. If you use points to book three of those six flights, which won’t earn you more points, and use JetBlue Business Card to book the three other flights, your three flights booked with JetBlue Business Card would earn you $550 in JetBlue travel.

If you add the 5,000 bonus points every year after your account anniversary, which is worth $50 as long as you use it, you have $600 in JetBlue travel. This is enough for a one-way ticket portion of the $1108 flight example we have been using from Chicago to Orlando.

On this flight, the one-way tickets cost the same as for the roundtrip, so you could book one flight with points and the other with your JetBlue Business Card and you will have successfully redeemed $600 in JetBlue travel, more than paying for the $99 annual fee. One-way tickets are typically a little more expensive if they are premium tickets typically purchased by business travelers, but less expensive for discount airlines. What this means for you is that if you are set on flying in first class or business class, which is called Mint on JetBlue, you may have to earn more points to make sure you have enough for the flight you want.

Note that when you book a JetBlue flight, three popular options for the regular class seating are the Blue fare, Blue Plus Fare, or Blue Flex fare. The item that might make the biggest difference in choosing between the options is checked bags.

Checked bags are typically $30 for the first bag and $40 for the second bag. The Blue fare doesn’t include checked bags, while the Blue Plus fare includes one free checked bag and costs about $15 more than the Blue fare, which makes it a financial sensible option. The Blue Flex fare includes two free checked bags and costs about $100 more than a Blue fare. $100 is more than just paying for the checked bags would cost, but you also get no change fees and free same-day changes.

Change fees are relatively complicated, because they increase with flight price. For example, the lowest tier, for fares up to $99, has change fees which are $75 for Plus and Blue. The highest tier, for fares $200 or more, has change fees which are $200. Same-day changes cost $75, but again on Blue Flex they are free.

While the normal rate is 6X points on JetBlue purchases, Blue Plus earns you 7X and Blue Flex earn 8x. You also get 300 points for every JetPaws fee, the JetBlue program to bring your pet to your destination with you, which is $125 each way.

After spending $50,000 or more on purchases each calendar year, you earn Mosaic benefits, which include a free first and second checked bag, no change and cancellation fees for anyone on the itinerary, early boarding, an expedited security checkpoint line, and complimentary alcoholic beverages onboard.

If you fly JetBlue regularly for business, this is a great card for you.
