Is TD First Class Visa Signature worth it?

TD First Class Visa Signature is a great card for people who want to get simple cash back rewards for their travel purchases. Cardholders earn 3X First Class miles on travel and dining purchases, including flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises and dining and 1X First Class miles on all other purchases.

On sign up, you get 25,000 bonus miles, equal to a $250 statement credit towards travel or dining purchases. Each Mile is worth at least one cent when redeemed for Cash Back, gift cards or travel. However, there is not a travel portal or opportunity to redeem miles for great deals on trips. Miles can be redeemed once you have already booked a trip elsewhere, which gives you a lot of flexibility.

For cash back, the redemption is exactly one cent. With this in mind, you would need to earn $89 x 100 = 8900 Miles to make up for the $89 annual fee. That’s 8900 Miles / 3 = $2967 in purchases earned on the 3X Mile reward tier of travel and dining purchases.

For example, that could be 12 months of $150/month dining expenses, plus two $500 round trip tickets across the country plus two 1-day $90 car rentals for $1800 + $1000 + $180 = $2980. If you think you’ll spend more at grocery stores than on travel, consider TD Cash, which earns 2% cash back at grocery stores.

TD First Class Visa Signature only earns 1X Miles on grocery stores, which convert to 1% cash back. If you won’t be traveling much and especially if you spend more on shopping, also consider the value you could get with a non-TD cash back card, like Chase Freedom or Discover it Cash Back.

With either of these cards you get 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate and unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases. Chase Freedom has a department store category while Discover it Cash Back has an online retailer category specifically for Amazon.com, Target, and Walmart.com.

It’s not easy to hit the maximum $1500 each quarter in the 5% cash back category, especially when it’s gas, but if you spent just half the maximum each quarter you would earn .05 x $750 x 4 = $150. Keep in mind those cards have no annual fee.

Considering all the options, if you travel and dine out relatively often and want simple cash back for your purchases, TD First Class Visa Signature is a solid card for you.

Pros

  • 3X First Class miles on travel and dining purchases, including flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises and dining
  • Miles don’t expire
  • Visa Signature benefits
  • Low APR

Cons

  • No travel portal. To redeem miles to cover a trip, you book the trip with your card and then contact TD Rewards Center to redeem miles to cover the cost
  • Miles can only be redeemed for full 1 cent statement credit after you’ve accumulated 25,000 miles, otherwise they can be redeemed for one half cent per Mile
