Is TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard worth it?

TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard is a great card for people who enjoy shopping at TJ Maxx and its sister department stores. Cardholders earn 5 points per $1 on purchases at Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra (formerly Sierra Trading Post), and Homesense, which are all TJX stores.

A $10 rewards certificate is issued for every 1,000 points earned, meaning each point is worth one cent, and the total rewards rate is 5% back. This is like having a 5% off coupon on unlimited future purchases. If the items you are purchasing come to a total value less than the reward certificate, you get to keep the remaining balance. This is good news, because believe it or not some store cards make you sacrifice these extra rewards.

The other good thing about TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard is you get 10% off your first online or in-store purchase.

One bad thing about the card is that consumers have reported having their credit limit lowered without explanation. This is up to the bank, but one reason you may be provided for the lowered limit is because you haven?t been using the card. Regardless of what you are told, it can be a surprise and it can hurt your credit score, so it?s important to mention that this card is not for building credit.

For people who can pay their balance and are not looking to build credit but just want to save money on future purchases at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, or Homesense, TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard is a great card.

Should you apply for TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard?

If you?re trying to decide if TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard is the right card for you, consider if you already shop at T.J.Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and Homesense a lot and had take advantage of previous perks they had. For example, if you had been a member of the free TJX Rewards Access program before it was discontinued, you may be familiar with some of the free giveaways. One recent giveaway, on 11/17/2018 before TJX Rewards Access was fully discontinued, included a free roll of gift wrap giveaway for every member. If that’s the kind of perk you would appreciate, you’re in the right place. TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard cardholders receive invites to exclusive private shopping events held across the family of TJX stores. The events are on the same day at all stores.

Can TJ Maxx Credit Card be used anywhere?

It depends. There is one application for two TJX cards. If you don?t get approved for TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard, you might get approved for TJX Rewards? Card, which is identical except you can?t use it anywhere: it doesn?t offer the 1 point per $1 on purchases on everyday purchases at non-TJX stores. It?s a TJX store card only.

  • Earn 5% back in rewards at Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and Homesense, not just TJ Maxx.
  • Exclusive private shopping events are fun to look forward to and change to fit the season

Cons

  • No Intro bonus
  • There have been a lot of complaints about Synchrony Bank. Keep in mind Synchrony Bank is the largest provider of private label credit cards in the U.S., so it definitely is not a fly-by-night company.

How does TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard compare to other cards?

TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard earns 5 points per $1 at TJX stores, which are TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra (formerly Sierra Trading Post), and Homesense and 1 point everywhere else. To find out if it?s the right card for you, let?s compare it with two leading cards.

TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard vs Discover It Cash Back

Discover It Cash Back

Discover It Cash Back is one of the highest cash back cards, with 5% cash back in rotating categories up to a quarterly maximum of purchases, currently $1500, and unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases. The categories don?t include department stores, which means that people who shop at TJX stores a lot should still get TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard. For example, if you spend $10,000 at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and Homesense combined, you will earn $500 in TJX store purchases if you have TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard. With Discover It Cash Back, you will earn $100. If maximizing your cash back is important to you, Discover It Cash Back is the better choice. Activating categories takes a little bit of effort, but you can earn up to $300 per year on only $6000 of spend if you fit your spending to the categories. And that?s not including the unlimited 1% cash back. If you spend a lot at TJX stores, you?ll want to pick up TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard for the 5% rewards, but if you don?t already have a card for everyday spend, Discover It Cash Back is a great card to pick up as well, because the 5% cash back categories are so easy to make purchases in.

Here are the 2020 5% cash back categories:

Jan ? Mar 2020Grocery Stores, Walgreens, and CVS
Apr ? Jun 2020Gas Stations, Uber, Lyft and Wholesale Clubs
Jul ? Sep 2020Restaurants and PayPal
Oct ? Dec 2020Amazon.com, Walmart.com and Target.com

TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard vs Citi Double Cash

Citi? Double Cash

Citi Double Cash is one of very few unlimited flat-rate cash back cards that offer 2% cash back. Cardholders earn 1% when they make the purchase and another 1% when they pay the bill. This means that if you spend $10,000 at TJX stores, you would earn $200 with Citi Double Cash. With TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard, you would earn $500 in TJX purchases. Because Citi Double Cash doesn?t have any categories you have to activate, it?s an excellent card for everyday spending, especially for high spenders who would typically go over category limits. For people who spend a lot at TJX and enjoy watching their rewards pile up and redeeming rewards certificates, it?s a tough choice between Citi Double Cash and TJX Rewards? Platinum MasterCard, because both earn rewards everywhere. If you care about cash back value though, it?s no contest, and Citi Double Cash will be the winner by a mile. Not to mention you get the following benefits:

Benefits

$0 Fraud Liability
Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
Concierge Service
Extended Warranty Program
Travel Accident Insurance
Purchase Protection
